ASM Headers & Canton Pans

I guess my engine builder did not listen to me when I asked to get a stock replacement oil pump and not a HV Pump installed. I noticed that my oil pressure starts to drop at about 4,000 rpm under WOT. The pressure gage is is initially pegged and then starts to drop around 4000 rpm drops down to below 35-40 PSI at 6200.

This motor has 2000 mile on it and I never saw the pressure drop like this before. Needless to say I only saw this once before I parked it.

It looks like I'll have no alternative but to drop the pan. I was wondering if I got the Canton Pan and pickup from Nu-tek if my AS&M headers will clear. The Driver side of my y-pipe has a crossover pipe which runs between the k-member and the well of the oil pan. It looks like it might be a problem with these headers. Is anybody running the canton pan with AS&M Headers?

Another alternative, as I am not buying headers and a new oil pan, is to get a stock pump and install that in place of the melling HV Pump.

I got a 383 also with a Canton Pan, but I have SLP shorties on it. The Canton Pan does not drop any lower but widens on the bottom. I had to make a custom Y-pipe but only because of the dual cat system I had. I ended up removing the catz. It was only like a 100 bucks anyway.

I also got the Melling HV pump that came with the oil pan becuase you will a different pick-up anyway. I have no problem with my Melling, I just changed and put in the low pressure spring that came with it.

My engine has 500 miles on it so I haven't nailed her yet and can't tell ya about the psi at WOT. I know that at cold start she's about 40 psi and after it warms up, about 25-30ish.

I'll tell ya this though.....the new pan is awesome. Fits likes a glove right on with no mods like what so ever and perfect.

I was really hoping someone had this combination installed. If I can't confirm this combination will work I will likely have to install a plueprinted stock pump.

Dragging this up from the dead as I'm in the same boat right now. Just need to find out if a canton will work before I order my new motor.

Someone must know the answer to this!!

Fastbird93,

I have the newer style Canton pan (242T) on my 95 Formula w/SLP single-cat (94-95 style) headers. On my car, the y-pipe that comes with the SLP headers would not fit. Even with the y-pipe resting on the bottom of the oil pan, the drivers side collector was still about one inch away from mating properly. It appears that the oil pan core that Canton uses to manufacture the 242T LT-1 pan is a little deeper than the stock LT-1 pan. I am going to have to modify my SLP to y-pipe in order for it to fit. I don't know whether the AS&M headers will have the same problem or not. Just some food for thought...

Thanks for the info...

I do believe that the SLP and ASM y-pipe are very similar, in which case I would have to have something custom made.

Thanks again.
