aparently the LT1 will in fact start with the throttle body removed...

i had forgotten that i had the throttle body removed to look for my oil leak (intake manifold) and when i was inside the car i wanted to show my dad that my new power window motor was oh so much faster... so i turned the car on. took a long time to crank but eventually it started and shot way up. i instantly remembered the throttle body was gone and shut it off, but even then it took awhile to finally wind down.

next time i turned the car on with everything put back together it took a long long time to start, but it finally did.

could i have hurt anything?

Alll the TB does is meter air. If you start it up w/o one, your basically running it WOT until you shut it off. You probably just messed with the sensors a bit since it was reading wrong TPS and IAC voltages. You should be fine.

Well how does the car feel now that it's all back together? Is it throwing a code, SES lights, anything like that. Usually when you damage the engine by over revvvving the crap out of it you'll know right away. Good luck!!

over revving

By the way, while we are talking about over revving, i took my car up to 6k the other day while racing. Its an A4 but i didnt think the tranny would let it go that far. Guess i was wrong. I dont think it hurt nothing cause it seems to be running fine. I was just curious about how high you guys took your revvs up to, what the safest is you know. I know they dont call it red line for nothin, but i know LT1's are pretty tough motors. My car probably wont ever see that high of revvs again until its paid for.

when you spin an engine that high with stock valve train, you will probably float the valves before you bend a pushrod or drop a valve or anything. but you could pull a valve cover and take a look to see if everything looks alright.

You should be fine taking it to 6000 by the stock tach. Mine is off by about 400 rpms according to my datalogger.

what do u mean when you say "float the valves", like warping them or something? What does the engine do when that happens, like, what do u look for symptom wise, and how do you fix it?

valve float is caused with hydrualic lifters...what is it is the lifters are moveing so fast when they close there isnt enough spring pressure to keep them closed, and the "boucne" off the seat...causing a massive miss...kinda sounds like a rev limiter

the only way to cure this is stiffer springs or solid lifters
