anyway to tell if fans are on high speed?
anyway to tell if fans are on high speed?
...other than the noise? they do come on when the engine gets to 225 or so. but how do i know if its high or low speed settings. i know i used to be able to hear them come on before, but not when I was tryin to listen for them today....i swapped around the fan and fog lamp relays and the fog lights work, so i assume the relays are good? anything else so I can figure it out? thank you
Listening and observation of the fans is one way. The fans are fairly quiet on low and reasonably loud on high. 226º is low ON temp and 235º is high ON temp. If you think they are on high, you can pull the #2 relay and it should go down to low. You can also check to see if the circuitry is ok by connecting pins 5 and 6 on the DLC and turning the key to ON (not start). This puts the pcm into "field service enable" mode and will run the fans on high. This does not guarantee that the fans will come on high when they are supposed to, as the pcm relies on the temp sender in the water pump to feed it info. It will prove that the pcm/wiring/relays are intact.
oh okay thanks shoebox, it never gets up to 235F, hits 226 and comes back down. I wanted to know b/c I wanted to see why my car overheated at Strauss Auto last night, I had them doing a flush. He while he was putting in the new coolant and draining the old, I think the thermostat closed b/c the new one was cooler. so she wasnt getting as much in as was leaving and she overheated. I was surprised he wasnt payin attention to my guages, I had to come into the service area and noticed it was pegged in the red. and he was tryin to say something was wrong with my fans, I was like whats the fans going to do if there's no coolant to cool it down. ANY way! I thank you and I will just check the high speed operations tomorrow as per your suggestion.
