Anyway to check for a bad lifter w/o pulling the intake?

I'm getting a loud ticking/clacking noise on the passanger side. It varies with engine rpm and appears louder when the car is cold. Just relashed both sides with the car running a couple days ago. I have comp r's and I set the preload close to 1/16. Also, replaced the PS header gasket recently b/c a thought it was causing the noise. Only have 800 miles since the mods in my sig. I've read many posts about lifters, just can't find a way to determine if they're bad without ripping off my perfectly sealed intake . For instance, some say a "spongy" lifter is bad, others say that it's merely not primed. I also read that monitoring vacuum can help determine bad lifters, but the post wasn't specific as to why or what values to look for. Any help would be appreciated.

yea, it should go away the longer the motor is runing to a point if it is a bad lifter, i haven't have any experience with the comp r's but i don't think they pump up much anyway.

I've done some speaking with Comp about the R lifters, as I had a strange occurrence with them. Comp told me this:

Once the lifters are pumped they should not bleed down.
Sounds odd, I know, but remember that they're talking about the R series.

If you have one that's not holding it's pump while the car is running, you may indeed have a bad one. I was having that exact problem with mine.

My Comp R's always make noise. I've tried adjusting them and can get them perfectly quiet and locked down. After driving it for a while sooner or later they start clacking again. They aren't really lose at all. I just figure they make noise.

With the comp R's at optimal lash they're going to be a bit noisy at idle, but quiet down once the motor is revving. At least that's what I've heard. Haven't really experienced a "good" set yet.

Fastbird93--I've read many of your posts... Trust me, I'm starting to feel your pain . I've learned that comp r's with pro mag rockers tend to create a rather noisy valvetrain. I've had far better success lashing the rockers when the car is running rather than the car off TDC method. The "spongy" lifters I mentioned above were found when the car was off. On either side, if I would push down on the pushrod, some lifters would feel like a loose spring--took almost no effort to push it down . Again, some say this is a broken lifter while others say it has just bled off. Still not sure how to distinguish between the two.....

As for the the noise I'm hearing. On either side, the valvetrain is noisy but is in unison--like what many describe as a sewing machine. However, I can clearly hear a separate ticking/clacking noise on the PS. Definately louder than the DS. I'm going to pull the valve cover tomorrow, but I'm almost sure it's not due to lash. That's why I'm questioning about how to diagnose bad lifters......
