Anyone using Melling 155 pump and 3/4" pickup tube?

I was curious if anyone was running this setup or if the melling requires a 5/8" pickup instead of the 3/4".

Thanks.

Thats the setup I have and wont be going in for another week or 3. I bet you're wondering about the insanely tight fit of the pickup tube into the pump itself. Not too sure about that myself.

Yah, I may have to have a machine shop press it in. It looks insanely tight.

wow, did i have a time with this one. but ill give you the same advice i got. put the bottom half of the pump in a vice. line the pick up tube up with the pump, take an open end of a wrench that fits just right over the tube and put in front of the lip on the pickup tube. take a hammer and tap the wrench so that it puts pressure on the tube toward the pump. this will take what seems like forever. i assure you that it is possible to do. just wont be easy. or take it to a shop to get done. that would be easier.

Re: Anyone using Melling 155 pump and 3/4" pickup tube?

It was a piece of cake getting mine in. I just took a long crescent wrench and a hammer and I coehersed it into place.

I have the oil pump now mounted on the engine and I am trying to figure out what angle the dang oil pickup tube is supposed to be sitting at. I plan on welding it in place and I want to make sure I am correct.

I took my tape measure and measured from the rails to the bottom of the deepest part of the pan. I got 8". My LT1 engine rebuild book says to make sure that there is between 3/8" - 5/16" of room from the bottom of the oil pan sump to the pickup tube. However Is this to the bottom of the pickup tube or to the screen? I measured from the block to the pickup tube screen until I had 7 5/8". This should leave about 3/8" between the pickup tube screen and the bottom of the pan.

Please let me know If I am going about this correctly.

Thanks.

This is why I say that the pickup don't just fall out of these pumps like people say they do.
They make a tool to install the pickup. You should take it to somebody that has the tool to prevent damage to the fit in the housing.

Roll up a ball of modeling clay and put it on the solid metal part of the pickup.Install the pan. Remove the pan and measure the thickness of the ball, that's the distance from the pan floor that the pickup is at.

I will try that, but for some reason it seems as though my pickup is a lot looser than it should be and it might just end up rolling the pickup down rather than squishing the clay.

Did you use a new pickup? Or did you ruin the fit trying to install it?

New pickup, new pump, new spring, new metal collar shaft.

I had to lightly tap the pickup into place. Well, not lightly but enough to get it in the pump with about 15 taps. I have heard of using loctite on the pickup prior to install so it stays better. It will defiantly not come loose, I tried pulling it out. However if I give it a little pressure I can move the pickup.
