Anyone upgrade your brakes? Either w/Baer or LS1?

Thinking about doing this over the winter, my stock brakes really suck. If they were like the LS1 cars, that'd be fine, those brakes are wonderful. But I can't even lock up the brakes in this car. Plus they look silly behind Z06's....
Just wondering if anyone upgraded to a Baer system, even if just in the rear, or if the LS1 front brake upgrade really made a difference.

Yeah, the Baers make a difference. Better braking than the 2001 Camaro I drove for a week. They look cooler too.

I upgraded to the Wilwood 6 pistons fronts with 13.0" rotors. It made a HUGE difference. They lock in the 80mph range sometimes! They are quite loud at lower speeds however. The C5 13" 2 POT upgrade is also a good choice for cheap when compared to the LS1 upgrade.

Thumbs up

I have BAER track kit, which is basically the same as LS1, except discs are 13" and probably also thicker. I have no problems with brake fade on the track and performance is excellent on the street.

I have the Baer kit also, and it made a big difference. If you have the money, i would definately recommend it. I put on stainless lines at the same time. You won't be disappointed.

Could this be an isolated case?
I mean, these brake sets aren't cheap, I would expect zero noise coming from the brakes. Brakes should not make sounds, unless something is warped, or wrong with the install. I may be wrong, but it doesn't makes sense to me.

Heh. there are two options, you can buy quiet brakes, or brakes that work. Friction (more or less) = noise Similar with brake dust, alot of the better pads will turn your wheels black in a heartbeat.

I heard also that the Wilwood's don't come with all the proper seals for street driving. Does your kit have thoese, or are they not even an option?

yes, but a well designed rotor and caliper will reduce noise dramatically

I went with the Baer Pro kit(4 piston alcons calipers, 12.5" rotors)
They look awesome, and stop hard. I have about 60,000 hard miles on the rotors, havent failed me yet.

ls1 brakes with stainless steel lines. Napa performance pads...

Car brakes great.. Ls1 brakes feel like 80 more horses of stopping power.

I drive LS1's a lot at work. The napa pads stop better than the OEM's.
If your on a budget and dont want to spend over 400 bucks on brakes, Get the LS1's with performance pads. They are great for the street.
250 dollars plus 100 pads was my cost.

No. I just installed these yesterday. Car stops on its nose practically, but its loud at moderate pedal pressures at low speeds. Meaning once the brakes are heated up if you apply moderate pressure the brakes will squeal. It isn't bothersome, just don't lay into the brakes. They are silent at low pedal pressures.

80mph standing on the brake pedal is silent, though how could you ever notice while your face is in the steering wheel.

It has to do with the pad compound, more than anything. My friend Matt has these with the Q compound pad and his don't squeal. E compound is a high temp race pad. (And what the kit comes with)

My install and experience: http://users.adelphia.net/~binnsa/wilwood.htm

This is true. They are a racing caliper, and thus will need to be rebuilt (according to Wilwood) every year and a half to two years. This basically involves replacing an O ring on each of the pistons.

Dust seals are not an option, they do still however have inner seals.

According to Wilwood, you can extend the life even more by cleaning the brakes every few thousand miles (say at your oil change interval?) with some brake cleaner. Its not as bad as it sounds. When is the last time you checked your dust boots on your stock calipers anyway? They often rip too, and then you're in the same boat.

Is there an online how-to for changing to the LS-1 brakes?
