Anyone here using "light weight" brakes on there Fbody ??

I've decided to put my car on a major diet.

I just received my BMR Kmember+ Upper/Lower Aarms set. I'm probably going to pick up the Dyna Batt Battery (13lbs) next week.

The last thing I can think of to reduce weight are a set of "light weight brakes (front & back). Here's what I was thinking:
http://www.fbodycentral.com/catalog/...f3670aa47086dc

Apparently they're good for a 50+ pound reduction. My question is, is anyone here using this set-up and if so, do you use them on your daily driver? How long do you think these rotors would last on a daily driver? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

If you don't reccomend them than please let me know of any other options for my breaks. They must fit the factory sized 16" rims. (I'm using that size 'cause that's the biggest size wheel that my MT/ET streets will fit)
Thanks.

Yup. did that already. First thing I did actually. Also took out the winshield washer resevoir and all the "plastic" crap in front of the radiator.

Here is a great list to lighten up your car.

IMHO light weight brakes shouldn't be used too much on the street. I just dont think they are designed for it. Unless your car is a drag car I wouldn't get them. I have a friend who has them on a LS1 car but his car is in the chasis shop right now getting all set up so I haven't had a ride yet. I will be interested in seeing how they work for him.

I think the Wilwood kit reduces weight and drastically increases stopping! The fronts won't fit in 16" rims but the back ones should.

checkout www.AJEracing.com he has some more lightwieght stuff to look at, like front strut coilover stup eliminating the upper a-arm, lightweight brakes etc.etc.

The drag brake setup shown is a nice addition if your not using them on the street in stop and go traffic. If you plan on doing more street driving, then you may want to shy away from such a setup.

Looking at which rims your using, change those stock rims to drag rims!! Bogarts are your best choice in weight savings and fitment issues.

...I'll give a quick scenero for you...previously weld prostars were the F-body choice of rim(due to lack of availability of other rim choices). Changing from a prostar and switching to P1 Bogarts is like dropping ~80lbs. Changing your stock rims to Bogarts is a huge gain guessing the stock rims are about 20 lbs, going to a Bogart P1 rim is like dropping more then 300lbs!

If your wondering how i'm coming up with these statistics, generally there is about a 1 to 8 relationship with unsprung weight to static weight...there are many. The weight of your wheels should be a large concern as there are many benifits to using the lightest weight rim possible.

Now if you use the strange front brakes and keep your rear stock calipers(for cost savings), you could run Bogart P2 rims which would even be a greater weight savings.

Good luck in your choices. If you have any additional questions feel free to shoot me an e-mail.

Steve

It appears most of you are reccomending AGAINST these brakes for general street use. I guess your probably right. Oh well. Guess I'll have to find other ways to lighten up the car.

I'm still on the market for brakes though. The stock ones are rusty and ugly looking. I have ZR1 style 16" rims http://www.cardomain.com/id/lt1fun so what brakes would you reccomend ? I'm NOT upgrading to 17's either. I'm running MT/ET streets so I want to keep the 16's. What would you guys reccomend? Any links ?

Thanks.

I read it just fine the first time. Thing is, I just bought these ZR1's this summer. Spent a pretty good amount too. Going out and buying ANOTHER set of wheels seem kind of a waste right now. I'm sure you are absolutely right about the Bogarts. No arguments there, but as I said I just got the other wheels a few month's back. Also, I love the look of the ZR1's & I wouldn't want to change them (even if I could save some/a lot of weight). Not right now anyways.
I do appreciate your help/suggetions though, thanks.

Sooo...you were going to spend $975 for a set of front brakes that might save you 50lbs if your lucky, but changing out to a different set of rims to save 300lbs!!! is out of the question, I wont argue the looks factor, but you could sell the ZR1s for a 20% loss in profit and buy the bogarts and still end up way under the cost of the brakes. Just something I noticed.'

Sell the ZR1's and pick up some Bogart's. ZR1's are a dime a dozen, and it's not even apparent that you've spent the money on wheels when you have those on your car. Get some Bogarts, and women will flock to you. They're kind of like that sex jacket on E-bay.

Seriously though, the light weight wheels will make just as much (if not more) of a difference than your K-member & A-arms.

And stay away from the drag brakes, the heat cycles that you will likely encounter on the street at some point will definitely warp them. They save weight by keeping the rotor thickness to a minimum, and they don't have the same heat dissipation characteristics as a normal rotor. You could honestly be risking your life by putting them on. Yes, they CAN work fine, but I don't think it's worth the risk.
