Anyone here *not* get their headers coated?
Please don't repsond with 'get them coated'
I just want to know if anyone has headers installed without ceramic coating, what kind of climate you live in and what they've been subjected to.
I'm trying the archives, can't find much..
Thanks,
Leo

I have the MAC's with their HTC or something coating. I didnt know if you meant Jet Hot or what. I live in Ga and they have been on the car for about 8 months. The only place that the coating hasnt held up is on the y-pipe where I scrape it on everything. Everywhere else is fine. If I had to do it again, #1 I would get LT's and #2 I would get them Jet Hot coated just for peace of mind. Hope this helps.

My brother didnt get his MAC's coated for his Mustang and they dont look too bad at all. He's had them on there for about 2 years. The car is stored in the winters and usually only sees good weather, but it has seen rain. I'm actually pretty suprised at how well they still look.
yup. got macs as well. coating is still 95% there, mainly just a bit of surface rust on a part of the ypipe. my cars lowered as well, scraping isnt much more of an issue than it was before headers. i live in a northern climate, yet havent taken it out in the salt with these headers. it sees rain and everything, just no salt yet. im pretty sure the salt would wreak havoc on them. ive had them for a year so far. guess what? GET THEM COATED
kidding. im not spending $$ on coating mine, theyre just fine as is. hth

lbrowne, my car is dropped about an inch and a half with a pro-kit by Eibach. I live in a town that swears by the speed bump so I really dont have a choice but dont let scraping every now and then scare you away from lowering you car. The benifits greatly outweigh the drawbacks. Good luck with everything.

i bought the edelbrock shorties, no coating. i dont like them. they get to hot, i have to run the heat tape witch makes them rot so regardless i should have done more research. get the full lengths and jet hot coated. good luck
I have MAC's with just the coating they came with (HTC?).... so far no rust visible, but I suspect they will get surface rust in a couple of years....
For me it would depend on $$. If you are splurging for the price of Hooker LT's or FLP's, coating is mandatory. But if you're going with a lower priced header, I think you run into a case of diminishing returns... coating is expensive.

My biggest concern with no coating wouldn't be corrosion but the heat. Lots of people are having nightmares trying to protect all the underhood components, and they have coated headers. It's cramped in there and there is lots of tubing and wiring that loves to burn through.
If for whatever reason you do decide to go with uncoated invest the extra time and money into covering everything else.

My SLP's aren't coated.... with the being stainless, never have to worry about them corroding.
On the other hand, I also did get "over the valve cover" looms and routed my 8.5mm MSD wires to avoid burning them.
If you get the wires done right, I see no problem with them.
(the 160 degree thermostat also helped a bit)

I have hooker LT's with no coating. I live in south texas and have no problems with the heat except I keep burning through one of my spark plug wires on the driver side. But I only burn through the wire when I quarter mile the car. It is because the headers rest so close to the engine that their is no way to keep that one wire from resting on the primary. The fix is header wrap for that section and heat boot or ovc wires.
Of the people without problems, I've noticed you guys are not running heads/cam. This may be one reason you aren't having too many problems, just a guess.
I learned from others' mistakes and covered the wiring, lines, heater box and haven't had problems... but it does get damn hot underhood! My coated primaries run just under 400 degrees at idle, I'm not sure what temp they get to under cruise or WOT.
