Anyone ever try that engine restore stuff?
Re: Anyone ever try that engine restore stuff?
tried it once in my 84z, got two hundred miles thing started ticking, 400 miles later had a rod thru my block and one thru my pan.(my fault
). not a big fan of it.

Don't waste your money. Even if it did work there is likely no point for a 106K LT1, these things exibit little bore wear or compression loss. Guys routinely find crosshatch in the bores of 150K+ former cop cars, and the few compression tests I have seen have been right around 200psi good by any standard. Bearing wear is what I might start to think about.

I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. About the only thing I would add to my oil would be oil stabilizer (lucas makes one). Engine restorers are usually bunk.

I used it im my winter beater a 84 Monte Carlo with a 305ci in it. Before the Restore it burned lots of oil and was pretty nutless. After the can of restore the oil consumtion went wayyyy down and the power was up quite a bit. I was very impressed with it! Keep in mind this 305 has been driven to hell and back and hasn't been maintained very well but its pushing 500,000 kms right now and doesn't miss a beat! I just put a little over 300 miles on it in the last couple weeks.
So if you think your LT1 has lost compression and is burning oil then add a can it won't hurt anything. But if those 2 aren't your problems, then save the $ for more mods to get the power back

Re: Anyone ever try that engine restore stuff?
i feel ashamed to say i used it in an old junkyard 302 shortblock i had in my 91 LX mustang. the cylinders had lowspots so i used the stuff. it helped power a lot. i dont know what the long term effects were. i ran that motor hard for about a year with the restore until a guy hit me and totalled it. if its got bad ring seal then it will help, but i wouldnt run it unless the motor leaked down a bunch, like more then 10-15%.
Re: Anyone ever try that engine restore stuff?
It made a difference in my 91 Blazer with the 4.3 at 125k miles. I used it at every oil change for the last 15k miles I had it with no problems. However, I tried it on my Grand Cherokee with a 318 at 120k when I bought it, and it didn't do anything for it. The 318 wasn't real well maintained when I bought it either. I think the newer Vortec and LT1 Chevy engines and the Magnum line all had different piston rings than the old ones like my TBI 4.3 that may seal better in the long run and not cause as much cylinder wall wear. Just a random guess though. The stuff I use now is www.auto-rx.com Best thing there ever was for high mileage engines. Just ask Patman the oil expert on here.
