Anyone ever tried making an electric cutout.

Like everyone on here I'm broke. I thought about making my own electric cutout. I thought about going with a throttle body off a different car with a 3" (75mm) opening. Or just find a 3" blade and get a someone to drill a 3" hole in a plate of steel. Measure everything up slap a 12v motor on it and save $150 bucks. Heck you might could start with a caprice or impala 3" maf housing, get the 3" blade, rod and motor.

Does this sound do-able or am I'm just getting crazy ideas from being up late?

i think that would have bad news written all over it. it would probably leak bad, if you look at an actual electric actuator, it has a surface where the butterfly seats, its not like it just floats in there. you can give it a wirl but i would just save my money up and buy one. i know this is a cheap ploy but i have DMH cut outs and there realy nice!! i had QTP cutouts and they didnt seem as nice.

Well I thought that throttle bodys seat really well and have the air tightness I would need. Maybe just grind away all of the access metal on the throttle body? It must be a pretty high torque motor to right? Because thats alot of air pressure that it holds in without spinning. I didn't think it was very likely that it would work. I just thought, sounds simple.

You could try a 3 in. ball valve from the plumbing department at Lowes. Would not be much to look at, but should seal.
