Anyone ever do this as a warning for a bad E-WP?

You would have to find a way to wire it into the ignition in the fuse panel. I really am not that great with wiring, I can do basics, but I cant see it being that hard for someone who knwos a thing or two about electrical stuff

engine shutoff, hopefully that is on an off road application.

can someone explain the point of this??

Is this just so you don't need dash guages or don't have to look at them??

No, if the waterpump fails, the stock check gauges light comes on too late. It comes on once the car is already overheated. Since they have aluminum heads it doesnt take much to warp the heads, or at the very least, trash a head gasket. So a warning device of when the pump fails is great cause you can immediatly shut the car down.
