Anyone else feel that K&N filters are a waste of money?
Does any more of you on here think that K&N filters are a waste of $40? I was in Wal-Mart the other night, and just for kicks, bought a standard paper Fram air filter for my car that has a K&N, and I honestly can't tell a difference. Maybe some of you do, but I don't see where it helps much. I doubt it gives you 5 more horses, I could be wrong.
Re: Anyone else feel that K&N filters are a waste of money?
I doubt that the Holley PowerShot or Fram Airhog are any better at airflow or filtering than the K&N. I just think that the paper filters probably filter better and flow just as good. Heck...as cheap as they are, you can replace them every 12-15,000 miles, and not even have to *recharge* them, just toss them in the trash. I can't see how that cleaner stuff they give you in them recharge kits can get them as good as new, like they say. What do you guys think?
Re: Anyone else feel that K&N filters are a waste of money?
I was always lead to believe the upside to the k&n reusuable filter is not tha tit flows the best, but that it will flow consistent longer. Due to being oiled up, it doesn't get clogged as easily, a paper filter will eventually lose flow....*shrug*. Just my 0.02. I got mine for free.
Re: Anyone else feel that K&N filters are a waste of money?
I don't think the K&N flows any better than the stock paper filter. The reason I bought one is that they make it in many sizes and configurations which works out when building a custom cold air intake. I bought a size that is about 30% larger than stock in surface area for my CAI. Allen

I think they all perform about the same... just the difference of the quality of the product.
Speaking if air filters... remember the guy on here who had like 1XXmiles on his car and was like "gee should I change my filter now" ..... ya think

Re: Anyone else feel that K&N filters are a waste of money?
No one ever played with the K&N paper vs K&N display with the lil ping pong ball that floats before??? Its a box with 2 fans on the back that when running will push the ping pong ball up a plastic tube. If you put a paper filter on it the ball drops, too much restriction for the fans to flow enough air. Pop on the K&N and the ball sits at the top. Now i know an engine sucks alot harder then a couple lil fans, but there IS an obvious difference. How much its worth i dunno. How about a few people go to the track, run a few passes, then swap to the paper and see what happens?? Only way to find out for sure. Just need a consistent car.
Re: Anyone else feel that K&N filters are a waste of money?
i domnt see how, you take the paper one off and put the K&N one on? Nothing changes but the filter? Im sure some time was spent getting it adjusted just right so th lil bit of extra air it will allow to flow will raise the ball and not with the paper one. But there is a difference. Like i said the only part that matters really are the #s it puts down in a cr at a track.
Re: Anyone else feel that K&N filters are a waste of money?
I have seen one of those demo things. They arent rigged. U have to switch out the K&N and paper filter so nothing changes besides the filter. There really is a differance. I wouldnt waste my money on one of the stock panel sized filters but i do have the CAI and i am never going to go back to the stock assembly. EVER!!!
Re: Anyone else feel that K&N filters are a waste of money?
A k&n filter does make a difference at the track. I picked up about 2 tenths. I went from a 7.62 to a 7.45 (8th) by just changing the filter. But on a stock car your might not ever see a tenth improvement. Also I have had mine for about 6 years and about 110,000 miles. Do that with a paper filter. The 40 bucks was well worth it to me.
Re: Anyone else feel that K&N filters are a waste of money?
Are you sure the demo isn't remote controlled and that they have a guy watching it who turns the air pressure up when you put the K&N filter on there?! And are you sure the K&N guys didn't know that you had changed the filter and then rigged the clock at the track to make it look like the K&N filter is better?!
Re: Anyone else feel that K&N filters are a waste of money?
I have one of those display machines..there is more air coming thru the k&n for sure..my car runs fastest with no filter though, I use it on the 85 because it`s ducted to the crowl hood plus it`s hard to find a paper 14x4 inch filter. A filter lid of 14 inch diameter in paper is tough to come up with too..I`d NEVER use a K&N before a mass air flow sensor though..I`ve been an auto tech for near 20yrs now and I`ve seen too many people buying new 3-400 dollar air meters because of oil fouling the hot wire in them- FT!
