Anyone care to discuss rev limiters?
Anyone care to discuss rev limiters?
Been reading up on the stock LT1 ('97) rev limiter and that the PCM shuts off some fuel injectors to keep the engine from over revving. According to MSD, this is dangerous since it creates a lean mixture which can damage engines at high RPM.
MSD 6AL shuts off the spark to random cylinders instead of fuel allowing the unburnt fuel to pass through, which is much safer for the engine.
What's your take on this? Opinions? Is the stock rev limiter REALLY that bad for the engine....especially for someone that like to rev their engines more often?

Re: Anyone care to discuss rev limiters?
Bad - yes
Terrible? Meh.
Spark cutoff is the better rev limiter, but on a stock motor, the fuel cutoff isnt too much of an issue. Obviously if you hold your motor at the limiter it will blow up due to a lean condition. To me an ignition box isnt worth the money just to have a different limiter.

I agree, on a N/A motor it is not ideal to cut fuel , but not catastrophic. Whereas you cut the fuel with nitrous and it could mean immediate death.
