Anyone with a 383+auto tranny+3;73 gears?
Hello everyone, like the topic says, I am wondering if anyone has this combo and is happy with its performance. The main thing being the gear ratio, I currently have a 3:27 axle ratio and am considering upgrading to the 3:73's. I have a 383 stroker with the LT4 hotcam and 1.6 pro-magnum roller rockers and a LT1 intake. Any suggestions or experiences?
got one and its for sale actually
you have 3.23 gears (327 is a destroked 350
)
i wouldn't really waste the time with 3.73s for a daily driven car
maybe if it saw enough track time, but i cant even go WOT till some time in 2nd with stock heads anyway
and i have a 2400 stall

)If you read his signiture he has a thirdgen with a 9 bolt. The 9 bolts came in 2.77, 308, 3.27, 3.45, and a very few in 3.70. You can buy aftermarket gears/parts for them from www.9bolt.com. These are supposed to be considerably stronger than the 10 bolt that many of the thirdgen and fourthgens got. It has 4 spider gears instead of 2. It has a 7.75" ring gear. It also has a cone style posi instad of clutch style. The axles also bolt into the axle tubes instead of using c clips like the 10 bolts. Miles they guy who sells the parts on 9bolt.com has a 500+ hp and tq 427 in front of a stock one with no problems for the last few years. The 9 bolt is actually made by borg warner.
Ben
I run the setup you speak of and I recommend highly that you match the cam with the converter. My cam is a custom grind to deal with the blower I have. Sorry but i'm not formiliar with your cam. My converter is 3200 stall speed. This is then important that you match the gears with size of the rear tires. All works together.
I'm sure you know this. Since I race from time to time and want good ET's. 3.73's were a good choice since I also street the car. don't want any worse gas mileage.
If you aren't concerned with drag racing (either on track or on the street) than don't bother with gears. Be leary of weak 7.5 rear ends though. I have a 8.5" 10 bolt. The 7.5" is very weak. It's very easy to change to the 8.5 inch and I got the hole rear end in a junk yard for $30.00. A little welding and viola. Sorry if I ramble Good luck.
