Any way to have a quiet valve train with 1.6 rr's?

Anyone know of a way to have a nice, quiet sounding valvetrain with rr's?

Is it the fact that they are rr's, or that they are 1.6 instead of 1.5?

Also, Self aligning are noisier than non self aligning correct?

Are there any 1.6 rockers that are not roller rockers? Are they safe to use with a cam like the CC502 or CC305?

I really would like to minimize the possibility of having a clacky engine.

Thanks,
Dan

The lt4 valve covers seem to keep the valvetrain noise down quite a bit over the stockers, so that may help you.

Thanks Brandon. Besides covering up the noise, is there a way to keep it from happening in the first place? That would be my first choice if possible.

I'm very conservative on what parts I want to buy. I want my car to perform well, but I also want it to sound like a well tuned engine. I don't want to pop the hood and hear clack, clack, tick....

Any way to get away from that? I'll sacrifice a little performance if I have to.

Dan

I have 1.6 rr's that came with the Hotcam kit and they are very quite. You can only hear them if you pop the hood and listen carefully.

So RR's aren't always loud. That's cool. I was under the impression that they are noticable when you install them. I wonder if different brands are worse than others for noise, CompCams, GMPP, or Crane.

Also, am I right in thinking that the non self aligning are quieter that the self aligning ones?

Thanks,
Dan

I think you will always hear some noise from them but it depends how tight they are and also what YOU consider to be loud. I can't really hear mine much but Im also use to them now and my exhaust is pretty loud. When I first installed them I could have swore something was wrong because they were so loud and annoying compared to before. You get use to it though. Anyhow, yes non self aligning are a bit quieter than the SA RR.

Well, 1.6 rr's are always a little bit noisier than stock 1.5 non-rollers. You can notice the difference but it is not to the point that it is annoying. Once I start driving with my flowmaster and no CATs, I can't hear them at all!

I hear mine at certain rpm levels and but not very much most of the time.

Definitely not an annoying sound anyway.

The only time I can hear mine is the first few seconds after starting the car.

LT4 composite covers will help out a lot. The stock covers just dont do a good job muffing out the the sound. Its probably because of the cheap metal it is made out of.

Jegs sells stock design 3/8 stud Crane Cams stamped steel 1.6 rockers #270-11802-16 for $91.99. I'm also thinking about 1.6 rockers for some extra horsepower but am willing to sacrifice a little top end performance for everyday quietness. Jegs also has roller tipped 3/8 stud 1.6 rockers #270 11807-16 for $171.99.

2cub49,

Thanks. At least now I know that the 1.6 rockers do exist. That's good to know in case I decide to go that route.

What would I be loosing out on going with 1.6 rockers instead of 1.6 rr's?

The stamped 1.6 rockers would still be safe to 5700 rpm right? I really don't plan on spinning too high with my new cam when I get it. Would it be o.k. up to 6000 rpm with stamped rockers? The cam is probably the CC502 and I would replace the springs as well. I wonder if there would be enough clearance for the new springs with the stamped 1.6 rockers?

Thanks,
Dan

mine arent any louder than the stockers on my car, you can only hear them at partial throttle for a second if you have your head under the hood

Crane and comp make a roller tipped design that really reduces the valve tip and guide wear. by going roller tipped over full roller you lose hardly any at all. the biggest asset of full rollers is less recip weight and lower oil temps. I have had Crane golds (self and non-self), TRWs,Harland sharps, Elgin, and comps steel full rollers and their roller tippeds, I didnt notice any extra noise from the roller tipped ones, but the fullrollers all made extra noise.
