Any way to check coil?

I think my ignition coil is shot.. but I'm not sure. The car has trouble starting in bad weather.. such as after it rains heavily. It take sometimes 20 min to fire up, and other times it takes 2 min. I think it is because of moisture in the air. My plugs and wires are fine, and my batery is good etc... I don't think this is opti related.. doesn't seem thats it. So the only thing I can think of (and that has been suggested) is that it's the coil. How can I check it before I just go out and buy a new one.. don't feel like wasting $97 CAD if that doesn't do anything... thanks guys

I dunno but I am kinda seeking similar info. I am kinda trying to figure out if a coil can lose performance over time/wear/abuse , or if it just DIES suddenly.

One reason this would be good to know is if it is only a $30 part, it would be a good part to have on hand...

Yeah.. good point.. I also want to know if it wears down slowly or just bang all of a sudden it's gone.

No moving parts. It will just die from a broke coil wire or short. Degrading would only be caused by corrosion but with the amount of voltage they convert, 12v to a few thousand, it would have to be really bad before you noticed it.

The way to check the coil is to look and see if it is stock. If it is stock IMEDIATELY remove it. Replace with Accell or MSD. Get a ignition amplifier.

Whats so bad about the stock one? I do have the stock one in fact... and I was looking at an MSD coil but I didn't want to just throw out $97 bucks (70 bucks American) on something I might not need. And ignition amplifier? What is that?

And I just looked at the coil from thunderracing.com 40 bucks american??? I'm so getting ripped off for $97 Canadian at this shop I'm going too...

Man... up here sucks for getting car stuff. I paid 288 American for my K&N CAI... ugh! But it's so much easier to just run over to the store and pick these parts up right there.. no wait. But anyways... I really need to know if my problem is the coil. Thanks

..

Before you guys go knocking the stock coil. I just wanted to say that I ran a MSD 6A/ MSD LT1 Harness and ran it hard several times for two years with the stock coil at over 100,000 miles. Never a problem except NAPA coil wire failure once.

PS:dont buy NAPA LT1 7mm $40.00 wires=junk.
Go with Taylor or MSD.

But is the coil my problem for sure?? Thats my only concern.

Doesn't want to start it moist weather such as after a night of sitting in the rain. It will start eventualy.. how long it takes varies however. Is that the coil or something else? Like I said, plugs, battery and wires are all fine. Thanks

Cool

One problem with the stock coil is heat soak from the head. Few people realize how damn hot that thing gets. I relocated mine far away from the engine. Might just do a page on it since it's raining outside today

I would stick with the stock coil as i've heard of many many aftermarkets dying out in just a little time. Do a search and you'll see what I mean.

I'd be happy to import parts for you if you can pay american funds. The prices your paying are outrageous ! Email me if your interested : halbertperformance@team.camaroz28.com

Cool

One easy way to see if the coil is going south is to pull up to a white garage door at night and with the headlights on,see if they flicker when you give it a little gas.If they do a dance, (the lights),replace the coil.(Go stock).My02

the only real way to see if the coil still has continuity is to connect a test light to it and see if it lights up, if it doesnt then you have a break in either the primary or the secondary windings, if it does light up thouhg that doesnt meen you have a working coil, it just meens it has continiuty and has to openings in the wire. after you test that, you need to hook up a volt meeter to the could and see if it has the right resitance. im not sure about what it is for our coils, im sure you can find that info in a hayes manual or somethin.
