there is any other ignition part behind the optispark?

The local shop told me that the problem of my car was a part that is located behind the opti, part of the ignition system.. anyone knows what is behind or close to the opti on a 1995 LT1?

Um...like physicaly behind it? Mine has an engine block behind it. There is a coil(which sets to the left of the opti.

Isn't the cap and rotor there? I have no idea where it actually is.

In 96 I think they have a crank sensor (not sure of its location)...otherwise its just the opti... So they are either retarded...or talking about something else.

Opti has a cap, rotor, optical disk, and optical sensor

Your Cam & timing chain are behind your opti...

Unless they mean something "inside" the opti is bad... I'd get my car and stay far far away from that shop.

The opti is a self-contained unit. Yes, there are some parts inside, but no other "distributor" parts outside of it.

IMO, if there is something wrong with your opti, replace the complete unit. Don't spend any money on replacing any piece parts. It's usually money wasted.

Very good advice btw, I used to ask around before I would let anyone touch my car. I got all sorts of comments like "its just a regular SBC, yeah we can do that no problem" and "Optispark? never heard of it.. you sure you arnt talking about the [insert completely different part here]"..

I learned that most shops play it by ear (at least around here), LT1s at the time I first got mine were few and far between locally..so the chances that any shops outside of a dealer had seen or worked on one were SLIM to none. Not something you want to risk IMHO.

The ICM [ignition control module]is by the coil [attached to front of drivers side cyl head] on these cars.. some cars have it inside the distributor..

Yeah... but those things are no where "behind" the opti ... like saying his ABS module is in the way... I think the shop is just trying to get in his pockets.

Well, I mentioned it for 2 reasons..
he says: "anyone knows what is behind or close to the opti on a 1995 LT1?"
The ICM and coil are both 'close to' opti..
I do agree that it sounds like a shop that either knows nothing about LT1's or is trying to pull something..

It sounds to me like the shop knows whats wrong with your car..I think its just a wording mixup confusing everybody. Perhaps there not familiar with the opti and tring to save you money by replacing just the bad part!! DO INFORM them to replace the whole thing like shoebox said. If you wanted to get REALLY simple print some pics of the parts and take them to the shop for verification! In the buisness im in we ALLWAYS run into these wording problems due to all the different companys calling the same part something different.I could be wrong though
