Exclamation Any gain going from 2.5" to 3" y-pipe?

Currently running a 396 w/ FLP headers. For the life of me I don't know why they didn't build a 3" y-pipe, it can't be a clearance issue becasue my god there is space there for it! So I asked them if they would build one but they turned me down stating the car needs to be there for it to be done and that people complain of banging etc. Hell....we get that now unless you do some fabbin or go solid motor mounts. I was like "can't you just cut the flanges off the existing y-pipe and weld them to your 3" system since it's the same design"? I haven't got a response back yet w/ that question.

So is there any chance I'll gain a little more pwr from doing this if I decide to build it myself? I figure Jet hot, Hooker LT's get 3" from the header collector on back why can't I? Just want to know if there is any real worth while pwr gain from it or is not worth wasting my $$ for 2 hapee's.

Thanks!

What is the rest of your exhaust consist of? If you are going into the standard 3inch catback, your 2.5 inch Y will outflow it.

Running the typical Borla 3" exhaust. So is it worth it? Thanks.

My car is not lowered, 16" wheels, have the 3" Y pipe, which I'm real careful with. But still have a small flat spot on it. With a 396 I'd go to true duals, just my 2 cents.

The first Y I had on my 383 with Hooker LTs was 2.5 inch, went to a 3 inch along with other mods, so I can't really justify how much of the gain was the freer exhaust. I know the tone changed tremendously (smoother and lower).

I know a while back someone did a back to back test with 2 cars with identical drivetrains and motor mods. one with FLP headers and a 2.5 inch Y and one car with Hooker 1 3/4 LTs and the Mufflex 3 inch Y. The Mufflex car made 18 more rwhp.

I'd love to do dual but I like sitting low for handling purposes and looks. So until someone comes out w/ a fab where I can sit as low as I am now it'll forever be out of the question.

A extra 18hp that's a considerable amount but I think hooker LT's may flow better than FLP's even w/ a 2.5 y-pipe. I may give it a shot I can't hurt. Thanks.

Wont hurt for sure. Problem is you have two 3 inch pipes flowing into one 3 inch pipe. A mufflex is a different animal as you have twin 3s into one 4. You just move the restricion a touch farther from the headers. How much is that worth? Not much IMO unless you are running twin cutouts or something bigger than a single 3 inch catback.
