Re: antifreeze?

I wouldn't mix orange and green. If you want to switch to green, fully drain the system.

Re: antifreeze?

I know it should be a 50/50 mix but how much antifreeze do I need? A couple jugs?

And should I buy one of those flushing kits or just get a hose adapter and run some water though?

Its been so long since I've flushed a system I can't remember.

Thanks

I would pull the t-stat out. Remove the knock sensor on one side of the block and the drain plug on the opposite side.

Re: antifreeze?

mixing them wont do anything as the new "green" formula will work in cars that used dexcool from the factory. but it is a good idea to go ahead and flush all the junk out of the system and put new stuff in.

Re: antifreeze?

Use distilled water to mix with your antifreeze.

Re: antifreeze?

there's still going to be some coolant in the block after you drain the radiator, I think that's why 94greenmachine is saying to pull the knock sensor and the drain on the block (but it can be a big PITA). I remember seeing a page or post somewhere about flushing with the garden hose, but then you won't have the distilled water in the system. I took mine in to get it professionally done because it was very rusty.

There is major coolant in the engine even after the radiator has been drained.I think it was pretty much 50% in the radiator and 50% left in the engine.Go ahead and pull the back outside head bolt off and see "ole faithful" sprout out the bolt hole !! I did and coolant was everywhere.

Re: antifreeze?

NEVER EVER EVER MIX GREEN AND ORANGE COOLANT UNLESS IT CLEARLY SAYS YOU CAN MIX THE TWO ON THE BOTTLE!!!! The two chemicly react with one another and your whole coolant systems will be eaten from the inside out. If you want to convert to the green, you must flush EVERY DROP of the orange out first. That means flushing the system 3 or 4 times and running it between for a while between flushes. A lot of the newer coolants you can mix with any color, but make sure it says you can do it.

Re: antifreeze?

Hmm, if you lived a little farther south than Windsor, I'd recommend straight distilled water and Water Wetter. I drain, fill w/distilled h2o, run, drain again, fill again, run again, drain, fill, add Watter Wetter. There is still a little green tint to the water but it's very weak. I do recommend going with the green stuff as I've had no probs with the Camaro's cooling system and lotsa probs with the Dexcool gunking up my heater core in my Blazer. When I get time, I'm flushing out the dexcool in it and switching to green, definitely before next winter. Sucks to have a winter beater that can't blow hot air all winter

The only problem that occurs is that you dont get the longevity that the orange stuff promises... it lasts like 2 or 3 times longer then the green stuff... but when you combine them it ruins that promise... thats all
