Question Another question on installing the head bolts...need answer ASAP!

The ARP instructions say that if they bolts go into a water jacket to use thread sealer, and if they go into a blind hole use a moly lubricant. All of the stock bolts that came out appear to have thread sealer on them. So should I just seal all of them or not? If not which ones should I not use the sealant on? Also, for tq. them it says to tq. to 65lbs if using a moly lube or to 85 if using 30W motor oil as a lube. It then says due to expansion of aluminum to only tq. to 60lbs. So what should I do here? Thanks

Aaron

Ok I re-read the directions and it specifically says for aluminum tq. them to 60lbs if your using moly lube or sealer. So I guess the only question is do I use sealer on all of them like the stock bolts? Or not?

I dipped them all in 30wt oil, then put a little sealer arround the bolt and bolted them in at 65 ft lbs.

Just curious, how does sealer stay on the bolt after it is dipped in oil?

Hee hee That was funny.

I just use RTV sealant on all of them.

that makes for a nice mess when changing heads...RTV would be the last thing i use. there is a special ARP sealant you use, or you can get the same stuff from the dealer for 10 dollars more...

IRABuss, this approach has worked for me without much mess. I recently did a BBC engine with alum heads this way. Also, several performance engine builders around Raleigh area do the same. That is were I picked up the idea. I would agree that ARP makes great products and I'm certain that they work well. It is just that there are other ways to skin a cat.
