Question Am i over-analyzing this... Timing chain installed wrong?? confused..

I'm at work and i'm wondering if it's possible that i installed the timing chain wrong? What i did was was, with the #6 cylinder @ TDC(or what i thought was TDC), i installed the chain with the cam gear dot at 6* and the crank gear dot at 12. (cam dowel at 3)

The way i found TDC was using a screw driver in the spark plug hole.... Now i find that both the #1 & #6 piston is at the top at the same time(not sure why that didn't hit me before..) Could i have installed the chain backwards? Maybe with the #6 piston on the exhaust stroke instead of the compression stroke? OR does it not matter? I'm confused.... HELP!

The crank itself doesnt care if its at #6 or #1 TDC. The cam's position decides what piston is on which stroke. If the crank gear was keyed on correctly, its dot will be at 12 oclock at TDC. The Cam gear can either go at 6 (for #6 TDC compression), or at 12 (for #1 TDC compression)

Don't your gears each have a dot on one of the teeth? Just line up the dots on the teeth. It is pretty fool proof that way. When installed correctly, the dotted crank tooth will point straight up and the dotted cam tooth will point straight down (towards each other) at some point during their rotation.

If your gears were dot to dot you have nothing to worry about in regards to being a tooth off. There's no front or back to the chain.

Yeah the gears were dot to dot, with piston #6 at the top of its travel. I then rotated the crank so that the cam gear's dot was at 12 & the crank gear's dot was also at 12. Then put on the timing cover and balancer hub with the arrow facing up. all good?

All good. If you were dot-to-dot then you can sleep tight. Good luck with the rest of the install.
