Stock flow iron vs aluminum.... who really cares? If you never plan to have the heads ported or bump the compression then just stay with iron. Otherwise I'd step up to aluminum.

I would never recommend anyone swap either stock for stock I know someone who bolted 96 Vette heads on a Caprice before he found the internet and he found out firsthand that even the best flowing stock aluminums were a waste of effort on an iron head car. Just took that guy for a ride in my mildly cammed stalled geared car yesterday think I impressed him when she broke the rear loose at 30mph roll with 255/50/17s outback.
As I said I am not saying everyone should swap to them and am actually going to go to aluminums myself just really hate the misinformation that gets spread about the irons. As for catholicism I was baptized such but am now a confirmed atheist .
I am off to GLD to set a new PB wish me luck.

Just because it didn't happen to you doesn't mean the problem does not exist, people blow head gakets all the time, I wanted to decrease the odds as much as possible.

you just made it sound like it was a problem you were having. back in the late 90s at AMS we built several poweradder lt1s with aluminum heads, several above 650rwhp. and never had a problem with HGs. i dont know how people are blowing them NA.

I have had mine overheat and peg the gauge probably 20 times MINIMUM, and never a blown gasket or a warped head!!

Re: Aluminum heads?

Not bragging about the ignorance of overheating it, or anything.....just saying they are tougher than people think.

Seems like My hoses always leak when there is NO water around!

What kind of combustion pressures do you think your engine is producing, how much boost are you running?

You see it come up every so often I think it has more to do with age than power with probably a little neglect of one sort or another thrown in. I would not call it common by any means but have actually seen f-body blown gaskets on stock motor. The expansion rate difference might even be the culprit just takes YEARS of it to cause an issue on a few cars.

Last night I went 13.2 at 101.3 I don't think that too bad for 4300lbs with my "baby" cam and crappy stock iron heads, got about 23mpg on the 2.5 hour each way trip and that includes the racing.3.42s are good for that but she needs more gear at the track.
