Aluminum Driveshaft Worth the Money on an M6 LT1?
Aluminum Driveshaft Worth the Money on an M6 LT1?
hey guys i recently purchased a moser 3.73 ring and pinion set and also found an aluminum driveshaft from a 2002 Z28. Im probably going to end up spending around $250 to get the driveshaft, is it worth the cash? what is the approximate weight difference? will it compliment the gear enough to spend $250 on?
my other options besides the aluminum driveshaft would be a pcmforless tune or possibly having my intake manifold ported and polished. thanks guys

For an extra $50 you can get a Lingenfelter aluminum driveshaft. I assume its better than GM but I can't say for sure. But I can definitely feel the difference, more than I expected to. But be warned that there may be clearance problems if you have a catback. Mine comes within 3/8 inch or so of my exhaust.

The major reason to upgrade your DS is because the stock steel one vibrates at higher speeds, this is a balancing problem and does not effect all fbodies with the steel shafts but certainly enough.
Going to a higher gear mans you will be likely turning more RPM's and the vibration problem may become noticable - or not.
a DS swap is pretty simple - and they can be picked up for $250 at most(all) times.
So unless you just looking to spend more $$ (I know that feeling) it may be best to see if the steel on becomes a problem and then swap at a later date.
The difference in weight will not have a large impact.
BTW - I went to a 3.5 LPE one but only cause I got it for a good price off a member - it is a very tight fit!

So what year is your car? If 97, the DS problem is supposedly corrected. I believe that a steel DS is stronger than an Aluminum DS and makes up for the difference in weight.
So if you have a 97 and you haven;t experienced any vibes, I'd sugges spending you money on PCMFORLESS, you're going to need programing for your gears anyway to calibrate your speedo (and if you have an A-4,adjust your shift points. Might as well get a 160 Stat too and have your fans programmed accordingly. JMHO
