Re: Alternator sound

battery level is in the middle when started then goes down. could it be a bad alternator or maybe a rocker arm cam loose? but at idling it doesnt really make the sounds unless i rev the motor

Re: Alternator sound

If it sounds like something is bouncing around in the alternator there's only one thing to do - take it off and open it up.

There are like 4 bolts holding it together. Just take them out. I don't see how a bleeder screw got lost in the alternator though, there is no inlet.

If anything is broken inside it's probably the brush holder. Sometimes the plastic breaks and it comes apart inside. If this is the case it's cheap and easy to replace.

If a part of the bridge rectifier is broken, it probably wouldn't be working so that's probably not it.

I could not tell where the sound is coming from in your video but if it is indeed the alternator, my money is on the brush holder breaking.

Are you positive it's coming from the alternator?

Re: Alternator sound

im pretty positive i got a blast of white smoke that looked to be from the alternator when i started it couldnt tell cause i was in the car. when i rev the motor it makes the sound not making it at idle. got under the car had my brother rev it and it is comming from that area i dont know what esle on that side of the motor would be making that sound.

Sounded like valve train to me.

If I were you I would take off that valve cover and inspect the valve train. If something is bad in the valvetrain you could trash the entire motor revving it.

I personally do not think that sounds like anything that would come from the inside of the alternator. Don't even start that car up again until you give it an inspection.

edit: just listened again, didn't sound like the valve train so much. Pull the alternator apart if you are certain that is where the sound is coming from.

Big enough for a bleeder screw? I never looked that closely. Maybe it is.
