Alternator question/charging question

My alternator is not charging the system at all, I was wondering if the wire going into the clip was unpluged could cause this problem? If so, what does that wire do? I think that it is just a signal wire to show the regulator the voltage but i could be way off.

Re: Alternator question/charging question

That wire tells the alt how much power to make. If it is uppluged then no power, as in your case.

Re: Alternator question/charging question

Phil called me the other day and asked me about this. I looked in the wiring diagrams and this wire goes inside the car through the c220 connector.

Here's a picture of the 220 connector.

The alternator wire is RED as you can see in the picture.

Just run a wire from your alt to that connector and you should be fine. The connector should be under the carpet on your passenger side near the rubber grommet in the firewall.

EDIT: He told me you guys tried shorting something. Hopefully you didn't kill the alternator.

Re: Alternator question/charging question

cool, thank you. I did kill one alt, but it was really old and had bad bearings anyway. The one i bought has a lifetime warranty so if i killed this on i will just get another one. I will run that wire there later this week and see whats up. Thanks a lot.

Re: Alternator question/charging question

The purpose of the little red wire is to turn on the voltage regulator. It is run through a 470 ohm resistor in the cluster assy.

Re: Alternator question/charging question

Whatever you do, do not plug the exciter wire directly to 12v you will kill the alternator voltage regulator. It has to go through the resistor as described by Shoebox.
