Alternater gauge maxed out, battery dead, Help.

Hey guys. My fuel pump went out and I replaced it with a racetronix kit. I re connected the battery and the alternator or power guage was maxed out in the red on the gauge when I started the car. When I started it, the battery was nearly dead and barely turned over. Since then the battery has completely drained and the car won't start. Someone told me that since the guage is maxed out it means there is a ground or short somewhere that is causing this condition. Could it be that my alternator just took a poop, or should I start hunting down a grounded wire? Also, Does this have anything to do with the fact that I installed a new fuel pump or is this completely coincidental? Any help would be great.

Sounds like ya got the racetronics wiring harness hooked wrong. It is probably in the back at the relay. Recheck it .

I installed the pump without the harness, and the car runs great, there were only one way to hook the wires up and it was only One ground wire, and a connector. Could this really be it? If i installed it wrong you would think that the car wouldn't run or pump fuel. I was wondering if it may be just a real bad battery (there has been acid and corrosion on the terminals) and the alternator is just working real hard to charge a super dead battery, I don't know if that is even a plausible explanation. Otherwise could It be a crapped out alternator? I will double check the wiring for the pump but there isn't much to screw up there. Any input would be great.

It would seem like a mighty BIG coincidence if it weren't the harness from what ya explained.
If ya weren't having problems before and ya are now, don't know what else it could be.
Put a V meter between the big red wire from the harness and the alt where it hooks and see if ya are reading a draw. Just disconnect the red wire and one lead of the meter to the wire and the other lead to the alt. It should be "O" with the key off.

Glad to hear it's up and running again.

I didn't have the harness. I just installed the pump. Which you only unplug the the connector, take the ground wire off, plug the new ground on and replug the connector. I will check again, but there wasn't really any place to mess up. I could very well be wrong though. Any more input would be great. Thanks

If ya don't have the harness running to the rear then what I said is irrelevant.

the voltage signal for your alternator gauge comes from the fuel pump power source

check if your fuel pump is running constantly, that could drain the battery easily
turn the ignition to on but dont start
you shoudl hear the fuel pump turn on for 2 seconds then turn off

If the signal for the alternator gauge comes from the fuel pump, and the pump is constantll running, What would cause this condition? There really aren't too many wires to cross, or mix up. I will check this out but when I first started the cart after the install, i do remember the pump priming. Which wires are for the alternator gauge? Are they actually connected to the fuel pump? Any help would be great, I have to get this ironed out.

Fuel pump primes for two seconds, then turns off, the battery is dead but if I jump it it starts fine and runs awesome, but the volt gauge is maxed out. DISREGARDING the fact that I recently installed a new fuel pump, what would a likely cause this condition? I think the battery is old, and I am also thinking that the alternator is the original. If those were bad, would the voltage read high like that, or is this DEFINATLY something fuel pump related?
