Almost finished my build. No spark.
Almost finished my build. No spark.
No spark on my v6-v8 swap.
installed are:
MSD pro billet opti
MSD coil
MSD wires
TR-555 plugs
New Opti harness
I ran out of daylight but I ultimately don't have spark from the MSD coil. I plugged in the stock coil and again no spark (both have different ICM's) so I don't think its that (ICM).
PCM was tested and tuned by madz28. Everything turns over starter kicks, thats new too. PCM is grounded correctly, all other wires are connected/grounded. But I don't know why I don't have spark.
I've printed up some material and I am going to check the connections out, anyone have any ideas on something I may have overlooked?

You can start here:

You didn't mention what year components you installed, 93-94, or 95-97? As in, vented or non-vented opti. Make sure you have the right coil for that setup too, there was a different one introduced in 96 (or was it 95
), but the earlier one has a single wire input and male output, the later one has a two wire input and female output.

I got the "light" out this afternoon. I have power from the Opti harness, power on units A and D, (I have yet to check b while cranking). While moving around I didn't hear my fuel pump prime at all. (Thats another no start problem i need to get on.) The ICM is getting constant power, the dual plug in is getting power (left side 2 female have power) and the right side male has power (black connector 1 pin) so I am not getting any spark(ark) from the coil, but I haven't cranked it while testing, I have a ways to go yet. Considering the circumstances, lets say the coil does not fire, but has all the necessary power to the ICM and dual connection, what could be wrong?
the vehicle was converteded to a vented style opti on OBD1 so its 95-97 on a 93-94 PCM (which is compatible) Could the fuel pump have anything to do with a spark problem? ffs...

No, fuel and spark are not connected, they just get the signal to start from the same place. And I mixed myself up earlier, the early coil has two 2-pin connecters while the later one has a single 4-pin connector.
Do you have a Haynes manual? It has a method for testing the coil. How do you know you are getting nothing out of the coil? If you can, use a spark plug wire to plug into the coil and in the other end put a spark plug and lay it on the chassis. Have someone crank the engine and see if it sparks, that will tell you if the coil is good.
Also, since you know there is a fuel problem, how do you know the ignition is bad? No fuel = no start. You can do the same test above with a spark plug from the opti to see if you are getting spark.
The fuel pump not priming is something different. Is it new or used? Were you having any problems with it before the swap? Just to make sure, do a fuel pressure test and see if there is any pressure in the line, it could be blocked or something. Sorry if I'm throwing stupid stuff out there, I'm just typing everything I can think of
. Good luck!

Made the trap door today. Took under 15 minutes.
The fuel pump is a walbro 255, new unit. Today I discovered one of the electrical harnesses leading to the fuel pump was not connected, i connected it and the pump still wont prime. I'm going to take the "light" out for this too, rain came i stopped working (i didn't feel like melting).
tomorrow:
So I am checking connector B on the ICM
Checking the coil (wire and spark plug (i've done it with negitive result)) again.
Checking the fuel pump assembly
checking the lines and fuel filter

no I have a 94 z that I just completely rebuilt and am using a 95-97 opti I cant get spark. I checked the coil the ICM the ground on the ICM the power from the computer and the fuse and it all has 12v but still no spark.
"vented" opti harness
im in the same boat...im trying to find a 95' opti harness...just found out that connector is the short one so thats why im not getting spark...HUGE relief if that turns out to be all thats wrong....anyone know for sure if the 95' 96' 97' opti connections have any differences?
