AirCar Results - Feedback Plz
Out here in Vancouver Canada we have a car emissions program called Aircare... Previously when i've had my car tested I scored way way below the maximum allowable limits for Hydro Carbons (HC), Carbon Monoxide (CO), and Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx).
Now I did pass the most recent test but the numbers were pretty close to failing. Sorry if they're metric but it shouldn't matter too much... Here are my readings:
HC (g/km)
Reading: 0.4407
Max Allowable: 0.5000
CO (g/km) - (This one was fine)
Reading: 1.9679
Max Allowable: 9.3299
NOx (g/km)
Reading: 0.8917
Max Allowable: 1.2400
Does anyone have any ideas what might cause my HC's and NOx's to be too high? Am I running rich? Or lean? Or is something else possibly wrong?

I am not expert on this but....
What can cause unburnt hidrocarbons and hot combustion chamber temps??
Unburnt hydrocarbons /////maybe///too rich/// but then your combustion chambers would be cold... and your NOx would be very low...
Now if your combustion chambers are really hot... maybe a plugged EGR?? a working EGR reduces Combustion Chambers temps and lowers the NOX....
or.. What if you running lean.??? so lean your engine may miss and send those hydrocarbons (gasoline) to the exhaust while the cylinders that fire up sent the NOx??
Any mechanich in this site that has any other insights??

From my own experience Aircare is a JOKE. Well I took my car in to Aircare and failed by .004 on the Hydro Carbons part of the test. Max Hydro Carbons reading being 0.5000. The next day I take my car back and the car fast passes and my Hydro Carbons reading was .0533 . I didn't do anything to the car, did not add any octane booster or drive it any longer to get the motor warmer. Just straight from my place to Aircare. I swear that all it is, is a random number generator. It's just a big cash cow for the Government.
From what I have heard from other people and one of my friends that works in a shop that does Aircare. Is that that getting a pass or fail reading depends alot on how that person doing the test drives your car. ie. they give it to much gas cause they want to see what the car will do. But on another note supposedly Aircare will be scraped in 2006 when it's contract runs out. We can only hope!
