air pump question...

what is it? what does it do? how to get rid of it? I live in a state with NO Emissions testing. I already have no catalytic converter. I am into performance, not smog pumps. (I only drive the car once or twice a week, so i am not a big polluter for all you liberal whiner tree huggers out there.)lol

Most people just take it out when they install headers but you can do it anytime you want. Basically if I am correct it just injects the exhaust manifolds with air so the catalytic convertor(s) heat up and work faster. Since you dont have cats then your air pump does nothing. All you do is unplug it, pull it out, remove air fitting hoses on top of exhaust manifolds and plug the holes. You will have to plug the hole in the intake with a plastic plug you can get at a hardware store.

I believe thunder racing sells the air hose blockoff bolts.

so if i wanted to order headers, a 94-95 header would work if i did away with the air pump? right? 93 specific headers are hard to find and $$$.

If you don't care about the emissions just get the Jet Hot or Hooker long tubes w/o the fittings. They will fit 93-97.

It blows a little air into the exhaust to help the cat burn any unburnt fuel. It does not affect performance.

I removed mine for the HUGE weight reduction......2lbs . No really i just removed it because i made a custom CAI and didnt feel the need the drill a hole on the intake so i pulled the air pump. But i do like the better access to the plugs that i got from removing it

so tell me..what all is involved in removing it. I am gonna get some headers soon. I don't have a catalytic converter on my car anymore. My exhaust is all off-road. I don't use it as a daily driver. weekend toy mainly. I am going for all out performance. Heck, it doesnt even have a radio in it! Its my 1LE wanna be.lol.
So let's get the AIR pump off...?? It is gonna be one of those ongoing budget project cars.

unplug air pump
unbolt air plug

get vacuum caps from discount auto to plug the hole in the intake

i would leave the metal piping in place however, huge pain in the *** to remove and it makes a nice zip-tie mount on the passenger side for spark plug wires when you put the headers in

no need to remove the pump however until you install headers, it affects performance not at all.

Does it throw any code if not plugged in? Will the SES light come on? If not, then I will remove mine just on general Principle.

One more Government Mandated part GONE!!

it won't set an SES light in OBD-1 cars.... which your 1995 should be.

however just leave it in, it doesn't hurt anything and it'll just be a pain in the *** making sure the holes in the stock manifolds arn't leaking. that government mandated part is plugging potential exhaust leaks

You are right... the government is less a pain in the **** than potential exhaust leaks.

I should buy headers!! Thats what i will do!!
