is the air pump needed to keep the cats alive, some say yes, others no?

Ok Iv'e read over and over again about this, and it seems no one knows. I am planning on runing cats for my true duals longtubes and need to know if I should hook up the air aagain to keep them running and having a long life. I understand what the air does and all, but have heard without the air, the cats can't burn the exhaust off properly and start to clog it up, when the cats are cold. Thus the air heats them and keeps everything working properly. Now I've also heard some say they failed emissions without becasue it ruined the cats. I've also read that there was a recall on the Impala where a shop could legally remove the pump without worry of ruining the cat. So which is it? I understand that startup will put out more emissions without the pump, but I'm not concerned with that, since I don't have testing, I just want to clean up the air and stay semi legal and I hate to spend all that money on cats if they're going to be ruined because I failed to install the pump!

The air pump is used to heat the CAT faster during startup. It's for emissions. I've never heard of anyone burning up a cat because the air pump was removed though.

Hi flow cats, from what I've seen the car sound looks good, a comparison puts it at one of the best flowing and its fairly small http://www.lt1f-body.racenet.net/mufflers.php I can't seem to find any other cats that are thinner than 4inchs, the summit catco is cheaper, but I don't know how well it flows, and I 've read of people getting these car sound for around 70 bucks catco is 66. I've always loved the smell of cats, and they get rid of emissions, plus they kind of act as a muffler, so I'm going to try it. I wanted to use my X pipe, but I doubt it'll fit, and two single pipes will fit up better anyway. I get slack from people all the time who say oh thats horrible, you are hurting the environment, see fast cars are bad! I want people to know you can have both. I saw an article where some guy pulled over 650 horses with a supercharger, and passed with flying colors on the smog. So really there s no reason not to have them, unless you cant afford them, or don't have the room like our cars I'll probably go with something lie this, it looks real good! http://pages.sprint.ca/modpics/files/3dualalb.htm
