air pump fuse?

hey guys snooping around my engine compartment yesterday and noticed the air pump fuse thats under the hood, 20amp, was blown. so i replaced it only to have it blow again as soon as i started the engine.

what exactly does the air pump do? and is it something that i need working when im driving? just wondering if i should make this a priority to fix or if its really not a big deal.

thanks

Re: air pump fuse?

The AIR pump runs for a couple minues at startup. The extra air in the exhaust manifolds helps burn the rich-start fuel the leaves with the exhaust. The heat generated by burning the excess fuel in the exhaust system helps the cat(s) heat up faster. They don't work until they are hot. After the first couple minutes, its not used.

There is a "recall" on the 95 and newer LT1 AIR pumps. Dealer will replace it for free, and add a few odds and ends.

No big deal if it doesn't operate. The reason the fuse blows is because exhaust leaks back into the pump, the water condenses and the pump rusts up, drawing excessive amps. Unplug the harness connector from the AIR pump, put a new fuse in the circuit, and the SES light will go off (only works on OBD-I 93-95).

Re: air pump fuse?

the SES light is the service engine soon right? mayeb that is the reason i have been throwing the code.

ill just take it to the dealer and say i heard tehre was a recall on this particular part see what they can do for me.

if they cannot fix it then i have to ask where is the harness for the airpump located? is it right there at the end of the exhuast manifold or where?

thanks for the info

Re: air pump fuse?

The electrical harness plugs into the body of the AIR pump, located at the front of the engine under coil/IC module:

pulling the fuse will set a code, however, leave the fuse in and just unplug the air pump, tada, no code

Re: air pump fuse?

well its already blowing a 20 amp fuse.. thats a decent size fuse in the first place to blow.
it blows immediately not like at random... so i think my problems are more than just too small of a fuse.

ill try unplugging the harness hopefully it wont give any bad sideeffects. and for the record its not the harness listed as the temp sensor the harness i need is actually on the air pump itself right? ill go check it out tonight.
