Air Pump?

I have a 1997 Z28 LT1. I have heard of guys taking there air pump off. What is the purpose of that? And will it mess anything up like the computer? I know on the older model cars you can gain like 10 hp but that is the one that has the pulley. Will I gain anything if i remove mine?

As far as I know, there is no gain from it, except to clean up your engine bay. On your car though you will need to program it out of your computer, otherwise you will get a check engine light. I believe you also have to plug up the holes in your manifold/header.

Most guys that get rid of the air pump or EGR do it because they buy headers that don't have provisions for them. I am yanking the air pump and EGR this spring in preparation for my Hooker LTs.

It will gain you no performance. It will also cause codes in your 1997 unless you have the computer programmed to ignore it. If you have strict emissions testing in your area, you won't pass a visual without it. The AIR pump is electric and only runs for a few minutes during cold start up.
