Air Fuel Issues- 5gas results inside

Ok here are the symptoms. While on the 5-gas at school here are my readings.

O2 - 6%
HC - 1500+ ppm
CO - .5 - 1 %
CO2 - 10%
NOX - 80 ppm

HC's are really high indicating a rich mixture.
The high O2 readings I think are from an exhaust leak at the air injection fitting on the driver side header. With the extra oxygen you would think the computer would richen the mixture even more. My air/fuel gauge is stoich. to rich 95% of the time. But heres what I dont get - My plugs are all white like its running lean. I know my valve guide seals are leaking so its burning a decent amount of oil but that shouldn't effect anything. Why are the plugs white but my car seems to be extremely rich? Could the oil show up as HC's on the 5-gas? I'm stumped. Any help is great.

Ya can run it lean enough it will "show" rich and ya can run it rich enough it will "show" lean. It has to do with the type of O2 sensor's and the way they read the oxygen.
Injuneer or one of the COMPUTER guys may be better at an explaination and typing a book about it.

Yeh I know if it runs too lean it will missfire and not burn the HC's so they will show up on the 5gas along with extra O2, but the CO is around were it should be. Since O2 is directly related to CO - one goes up the other goes down or vice versa - If the CO is correct (.5-1.0%) I'm thinking the oxygen in the cylinder should be correct around .5-1.0%. The higher O2 (6%) reading is just the extra air introduced into the exhaust by the leak. With a true 6% O2 reading the CO should be around zero. That still doesnt explain the high HC, with white plugs. Today I'm going to use some muffler sealer and seal the leak. If it makes a difference I'll get it permanently welded.

oil is a hydrocarbon based product. try to get the leak at the A.I.R. fitting(or plug it when testing) and get the seals o the valse good. the numbers you have indicate a lean condition so far. try and get readings at idle, 1500, and 2500 and we can analyze them better.

You need to get your exhaust leaks fixed before using the 5 gas. When I use a 5-gas I always plug, turn off, or block any type of air injection. Your O2 should drop to almost 0% if the catalytic converter is working, once you fix the air leak. CO2 also seems low, possibly because of the leak.

What are your fuel trims?

What are you trying to fix?

Re: Air Fuel Issues- 5gas results inside

I put it on the dyno and did readings at idle, 20mph, 40mph, and 50mph. All the numbers remained around the same. Today i'm going to fix the leaks and try it again. I'll post the numbers tonight when I get home. So you think the HC's could be from oil burning? I have new seal I just didnt get a chance to install them yet. Why would my air/fuel guage read rich most of the time? I'm throwing new O2 sensors in today also just because its been a while since they were changed. Dont think it will make a difference but you never know. I dont have a cat on so the air injection is kind of pointless. Its just there for visual emissions inspection. The CO2 is kinda low. Should be up around 12%. The integraters were over 200 on the left side and around 160 on the right. The exhaust leak at the air pump fitting on the drivers side could explain the higher integrater reading on the left side. The right is still high also. The car feels like it lacks power. Especially under load. I'm just trying to sort out these small problems. Mosty why my plugs are so white. Thanks for your replys everyone. Nathan
