removing an air pump on a '94 will not result in any codes - unplug and remove the unit, remove the lines and put the proper sized bolts into the exhaust to preven a massice leak.

What is the benefit of removing the AIR pump? Other than being able to get the FREEKING WATER PUMP OUT! (sorry bad weekend).

What is the AIR pump for? Does it just add more oxygen into the exhaust so the cat can do it's job better?

Air pump runs for a few minutes on start up to heat your cats up. If your doing headers, it makes it easier to rip the AIR, along with the EGR stuff off and cap everything. I had to cut the bottom crossover pipe on the AIR with a dremel in two spots to get it out. There's no performance gain, except more room and you don't have to worry about an EGR going bad or getting plugged.
