AIR BAG light
AIR BAG light
My air bag light is constantly illuminated and I have no idea why. There is so many variables because it has been doing it since I did my ported heads and cam as well as reprogrammed the PCM that came from a caprice. Any ideas? The caprice PCM has the same pn that the camaro one had and I changed the programming on it.
The PCM has nothing to do with the airbag light. (which is controlled by the BCM - Body Control Module)
Is this the only light you're getting or some other cluster funkyness? (jumping RPM, flashing lights, ABS light, etc)

Just the Air Bag light, thats it. I think I know why too, I just read that if you spin the steering wheel while the steering columb is removed it can ruin the steering coil. I couldn't resist spinning it and it looks like it will cost me $107 and a lot of labor.
Will my air bags still deploy even though the coil is broken?
Also while I was searching I found that after shops install hooker lts that people have the same problem, atleast I am not the only one who couldn't resist spinning the steering wheel

I did cam/LTs installs and never had such a problem before.
Find a used SIR coil and replace it. See what happens.
Removing the steering wheel is not that complicated and the coil is right there.
I am not sure if your bags will work right with a bad SIR. (if it's even bad that is. You should get your BCM codes scanned and see exactly what it's throwing)
OR, you could always remove the AIR BAG light pin from the BCM connector and you're done.

I went out to check the BCM codes, not the PCM codes madwolf.
Usually you can check the codes through the security light. The procedure for this is:
Turn key to on position
Turn key to off posiition
Remove radio fuse
Turn key to ACC position
Within 1 second return back to off position
within 5 seconds return back to ACC position
Read codes from security light.
Ive done this to my brothers 96 before but its not working on mym 95. Can anyone here look up the procedure for the 95?

Right. You have no BCM (you have a DERM) and the air bags will not deploy when the light is on because it is indicating a failure in the system. Yeah, if you spun the wheel, you ripped the leads off the SIR coil.
BTW, the air bags are controlled by the DERM on the 1996 as well, not the BCM.
DERM=Diagnostic Energy Reserve Module

you could just do what I did with the airbags, sensors, steering wheel, the whole works... SELL EM
no need to replace the SIR coil then
and you can get a nice wheel for less than the $107 you'll have into that thing...
