Dave,
As far as cams, there's two main ways that would probably work well. The 242/248 xe grind is a fine stick, but I'd suggest either a heavier spring ($30 for 977's) or a Ti retainer on the normal spring ($90) to be safe with it. Beyond that I have some stuff that's a little meaner & needs a ti retainer and a 977 spring. It would also be in the same duration range (low 240's int duration), but would benefit from a 1.7RR on one side, and unfortunately the only ratios over 1.6 Comp offers forces you to go to a stainless rocker which is a little more expensive.
If you want to stick with the 'normal' components (985 spring & steel retainer) then there's also something that should work pretty well & rev pretty far, a 245/252 with .575" on both sides with a 1.6RR. It will have a little more overlap than the more aggressive stuff, so it gives up a little down low, but will still make pretty good power in my experience.
What do you think?
-Phil

I already have 1.6:1 Comp Pro Magnum Roller Rockers, so I kind of prefer to use those. I don't know how much better the setup of a 1.7/1.6 combo will be over the straight 1.6 RR's with that cam.
For a list of my mods, see here:

Kind of lengthy, but you can see what all I'm running.
Basically, it's going to be a ~11.2:1 383
.035" Quench
Scat 9000 Crank,
6" Scat 4340 Forged I-beams,
SRP forged pistons,
Ferrea 6000 2.00/1.56 valves,
All ARP throughout the block,
Advanced Induction LT1 heads,
AS&M 58mm throttle body,
Jet-Hot Long Tube Headers,
Delteq coil-pack ignition
OBD II -> OBD I Conversion via Madwolf
SPEC Stage III Clutch
etc. etc. etc.

IMO, it doesnt seem like your ET/power goals warrant the upgraded springs and or reatiners
i would just run one of Phils in house cams, maybe his "212" cam or if has one of larger duration maybe...

I have seen some of phil's car's dyno well over 400rwhp w/ his heads/cam package.. Result's speak for themselves really.. If you really want i'm sure bret bauer could help you get a cam to work really well w/ your combo as well.. I wouldn't recommend a off the shelf cam personally as you have spent a considerable amount of dough already.. Why half *** it.. Good luck w/ your new combo..

I've got about the same setup as you and the XE 236/242 made a hell of a torque line in my motor. I don't have a digital copy of the graph but it hit 380 RWTQ at 3200 RPMS and never dropped back below climbing to 433 RWTQ At 4300 rpms and only droped to like 390 at 6200. And not to mention the peak of 457 RWHP at 6100. If that helps you choose.

Phil advised me on the same cam (XE 242/248) I chose to use it and the 977 springs. However my motor is STILL being built so I can't give you any power or driveability stats. I am excited to know how well it works myself!
