After head gasket replacement, transmission shifting very late to second gear

I want to say it's around 4500 RPM to 5k RPM, but the tach isn't working either so I can't be sure. When it shifts it throws you back in the seat, and the motor gets loud up until 2nd gear(obviously since it's not shifting until late). I didn't mess with any of the transmission sensors so I have no idea what it could be. Anyone have an idea on what could be causing this?

What type of vehicle are we talking about? Sounds to me like possibly the throttle position sensor is malfunctioning, or maybe not even hooked up. Post your car information, and that could help out a bunch. I once ran mine with the TPS disconnected to see what would happen, and that was pretty much what it did. May want to just double check all your connections.

Add a "Signature" with basic info about your car - year, model, engine, tranny and any major mods. That helps people help you.

Go to the red task bar at the top of the page, left click on "User CP" and click on "edit profile". That's all you need to do.

Now, that we know it is a 1993, it probably needs the throttle valve (TV) cable adjusted.

Hmm, my searches aren't turning up any results. Care to explain?

I searched in the drivetrain forum and found my own post.

When the TB is closed, there should be no slack in the TV cable.

Now you know why a Signature is important. Your 93 is not computer controlled, like the 94 and up 4L60E's. Hence, the possible issue with the TV cable.

Why isn't your tach working? That's another area where the 93's are different from all other years.

Sorry for the late reply...

Yeah the signature has always been there, but for some odd reason wasn't working at the time.

Ever since this motor was put in the car it hasn't worked. Along with the temperature and oil pressure gauges. I replaced the oil pressure gauge but it now reads ALL the way over - so it's obviosly not right.

This recent cold idle problem started when it got stuck in water that was only up to the undercarriage. Nothing in the floorboards, this wasn't bad at all. Something just shorted out and killed the battery.

I think the fuel smell and really bad sluggish problem when the motor is cold is a dead giveaway to something. I think we've narrowed it down to a possible temperature sensor problem though... I'll have to grab one of those first chance I get.
