AFR heads / LPP headers Which header gaskets
AFR heads / LPP headers Which header gaskets
I've got AFR Elim.195cc heads and LPP longtube headers, which header gaskets should I use. I had to pull my headers off for some work and need gaskets, but will the Felpro 1404's that AFR says to use leak? AFR has some what of a square port and LPP's are enlarged D-port
I have AFR 190 heads on a 97ss 383-D1 MM6 App. I use Felpro header gaskets, but they need to be re-torqued due to clamp load relax when new. I use the short style SLP SS headers and a combination of 12 point and hex 3/8 header bolts. The Felpro's have been there for 11 years, and, I have reused them after pulling the heads twice. I get good first time clamp load with little or no relax now. They feature a "D" shape port design which match the AFR 190 heads. Hope this helps. B.
I have been using Earl's header gaskets. They can be had at Summit. No leaks even with a bolt missing. They are easy enough to trim to match the exhaust port. In fact you can taper cut them if necessary to match the header if it is not to far off. I just trimmed a set for my AFR 195 competition heads.
Here's a thought, I wire race cars for a local performance engine builder (when I'm not at my real job). Street engines to 4 sec. 1/8 mile cars they do not use header gaskets only ultra copper permatex. Street headers to Lemons race headers. I asked how it was working for them. They said they haven't had any leaks or complaints. Went to a chassis dyno shop and they are dropping a LT1-396 in a ss impala with nothing but ultra copper permatex on the headers, they had the same response.
