I never bother just because I can't trust a non-keyed hub to stay put and because it's non-keyed there is no incorrect way to put it on. Not trying to argue, but it reads as if the original poster's hub is not showing TDC accurately.
I know all those procedures are on your site. Just saying the one he chose means finding TDC as simply as possible using a method other than relying on a dampener.

The hub is keyed, and it was at #1TDC by looking at the dots on the gears. It all made sense except that #8 exhaust. Oh well, I did it again using the E/O I/C method and it really wasnt as bad as I thought it was going to be...just a whole lot of crank turning.
I feel more comfortable about it now for the initial start up as far as the valves go. They will be readjusted while it is back running though...whenever that actually happens.

I KNOW that feeling; I walked that road many years ago myself. Once you get the hang of it though, it'll become second nature.

Like most things, the first time you do it is the hardest. Hang In There.

I just noticed I made a mistake in the procedure I posted.

When watching the EXHAUST pushrod movement in order to set the INTAKE lifter preload, the EXHAUST PUSHROD SHOULD MOVE UPWARD NOT DOWNWARD as I indicated in the original post.

What you want is to find the spot when the EXHAUST valve is JUST beginning to open. That's when the INTAKE lifter will be on the base circle of the cam lobe. So the EXHAUST pushrod should just begin to move UPWARD.

After typing the post, and before I clicked on the "Submit Reply" button, I re-read it to try to make sure it was accurate, but I completely missed it. I hope that in my attempt to help out I didn't confuse the matter further.

I apologize for my mistake and I corrected it in the post.

Thanks for understanding.

I just finished dropping in my new 388. Now comes the part of hooking everything back up again.

I won't be able to fire it until I can lay my hands on a new set of valve covers. My stock composite covers don't clear the poly locks on my Scorpion 1.7 RRs. I have to find a set of slightly taller covers to clear the tops of the locks so I'm looking at probably several more days before I can turn the key.
