Adjusting rockers on running car- let it warm up or not
Adjusting rockers on running car- let it warm up or not
I have cc306 with 1.6 SA magnums and dual coil springs good too .610 lift, and my friend has ex 224/230 with 1.6 SA magnums and 612 springs good to .600 lift. My friend got new stock lifters. His SA magnum rockers make more noise than my rockers and I have a little bigger cam. I know EX 224/230 has steeper lobes, and this could be the main reason his rockers are louder.
Here is the method I used to adjust mine and his cars- I don't let the car to warm up and adjust the rockers with engine running but not spilling oil since its not warm yet. When I adjust one side, I let the car to cool down for 15 minutes, and then I do another side. I use 1/4 turn past zero lash. Works like a charm on my car, but my friend can hear his rockers inside his car
, and he wants me to double check it (spend too much time on his car just for bear/pica/vodka already
) .
I was wondering if there is any difference between adjusting the rockers with warm/hot running engine and cold/warm running engine? Should I try using 1/2 turn past zero lash since he is using EX 224/230 grind and a bit of overkill springs?

Re: Adjusting rockers on running car- let it warm up or not
Im using comp R lifters so I go about an 1/8th turn but a 1/4 turn is fine for stock lifters. Are the rockers the same brand? I adjust the rockers on a cold engine and normally go back and fix the noisey ones when the motor has warmed up.

If you havent already tried, you could always use one of the methods listed on Shoebox's site.
http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech2.html#adjust_valves
I have tried all three and like method 3 the best but to each his own I guess.
Also, some rocker arms make more noise than other so if the rocker arms are different brands, that could be the reason for his making more noise.

I adjust stock lifters with the engine hot to zero lash and then I go another 1/2 turn min. to 3/4 turn max. This method has worked well for me and I have not had any problems rocker clatter noise.
