??? adding SS Ram air to a '96 LT1 ??

I've got a real low mile 96 LT1 6-speed car I added an OEM SS ram air hood to it a couple years ago and bought an OEM SS ram air filter box for it to try and make it functional. I tried installing it yesterday but no way it would fit. There is a valve over the driver side valve cover hard piped to the exhaust manifold that is right where the air box tube off of the mass air flow sensor goes. Any ideas why this is in the way? Did they mount this elsewhere on true SS cars? I know a standard K&N/Moroso air intake kit will flow a little better, but wanted to make the ram air hood functional. Is there anything fairly simple I can do to fix it? Thanks for your input

I'm really no help, but I asked the same question probably about two years ago now when I was trying to put the air box from my 97 SS on my 96 Z. I searched for my thread, but can't find it so I don't know what anyone said. I think the answer was to turn that AIR (?) pump hose and then I guess you would need a new rubber hose also I ended up giving up though and sold the air box and later sold the car

Good luck.

You say passenger side valve cover, but don't you mean driver side? On my 97SS, the rubber AIR hose is much longer and "s - shaped" on my car. The manifold feed that is coming off of the manifold is pointing the opposite direction. I did check in the 1997 Camaro SS Owners Manual Supplement..."AIR hose and tubes: Repositioning the air box requires a new drivers side AIR hose and modification of two AIR tubes" In the Replacement Parts list I did find:

AIR emissions systems GM/SLP part
Tube, AIR cross engine feed 100014786
Tube, AIR LH manifold feed 100015786
Hose, AIR LH manifold feed 100438716

Don't if these parts are even available anymore since this car is now 13 years old. Hope this helps you

I forgot to mention before - this is the perfect reason to go ahead and get headers

Sorry, you're right I meant to say drivers side. I figured if I got the fitting loose and rotated the valve around I could somehow get a longer hose to fit I might be able to fit the Ram Air box.... but I think it might be easier to sell the Ram Air box and buy a CAI. Thanks for the part numbers Pat/ you're probably right about the availability issues on a car of this age..... and blackbirdta you too are right. I probably do need to step up and install a set of headers. My car isn't a daily driver and only has 11,100 miles on it. I've been trying to keep it fairly mechanically stock for dependability. It's nice to just stick in a key and go when I get the chance to drive it and didn't want to mess it up and risk having to tinker with it or deal with the exhaust leak issues and burnt wires etc... you read about with header installs. I don't intend to take it to the track. Just a fun weekend driver, but it's tough to leave it alone and fun to try and add a few HP here and there.

Do you mean EGR valve (on the back of the intake manifold) or the AIR system/valve off of the exhaust manifold? I do not have pics of the engine bay from the SS I had, sorry.

Is this what you are looking for? The AIR manifold feed is coming off of an AS&M header, but it looked the same when I was running stock manifolds. That is the best picture I can get w/out taking off the ram air.

yes that's perfect and what I was thinking would need to be done to make it work. Thanks for the pic
