acting strange after axle failure

ok so last night my 10 bolt blew up on my way home. so i got it towed home and made a few calls and i got a 10 bolt with 2.73 gears which is quite different than my 4.10s i had in the axle that blew up. so tonight i pulled the blown one and put in the other one in. when i put it in the garage i dide out of gear it didnt have any problems with the motor. but after the new axle it is throwing a code and hesitates to start and when i decelerate out of gear the idle surges down to about 500 rpms and then goes back up and repeats that untill i stop. then the idle smooths back out.
any info on what could cause this would help thanks
