There are a number of good, "consumer grade" ECUs out there. I am partial to the Electromotive Tech3, but the FAST, ACCEL, and others are also quite functional. But before getting one, you had better have a good reason. Why? Well, they are quite expensive and besides the price of unit you need to add the cost of a wiring harness, provided on is available for you car. If not, be prepared to connect about a bazillion wires!

Once it's installed, the real challenge begins. Even an experienced tuner may take 8-12 hours to get an aftermarket ECU dialled in. And at that, it will almost never run as well the stocker when the variety of conditions (load, speed, temp, humidity, etc.) encountered by a street car is considered. For an inexperienced tuner, or someone without all of the tools and equipment needed, they may never get it to run right (or run at all). A significant fraction of the work that comes into the shop is people who have installed an aftermarket ECU and can get it to run right, if it runs at all! Don't be mislead by statements like "it's very easy to tune". That's correct in the sense that it is easy to make a desired change, but that doesn't mean it's easy to know what change to make to achieve a desired result.

In any case, only people with a pretty exotic combo will benefit from an aftermaket ECU. For 99%+ of us, after spending thousands of dollars to purchase the unit any many hours to install and tune it, the car will run as well as it did before (if you are lucky). The main reasons to go to one of these units are high boost or high rpm (>7,000) situations. If that's not what you have, you will be wasting your time and money.

well the reason i was thinking about it is because i know people who work at places that can get them around 600 bucks. and 600 for a fuel management system isnt bad when its as advanced as these are. the accel is gen 7(which means nothing to me) but its the latest in fuel injection. and the accel comes factory programmed to the specs that you give the programmers. and its adjustable with a laptop. plus it changes the newer model cars to the speed density system which is great for the stroker motors out there. it comes with everything you need to hook it up, including harnesses and adaptors. all you have to provide is the laptop for specifics.

but what i was asking is if anyone has used the dfi system. this is the only system im interested in because if its good, ill get it. otherwise ill reprogram my factory pc.

thanks for the response
