accel 300+ ignition box
accel 300+ ignition box
my father just bought a 96 firebird formula ram air A4 WS.6 and it came with an accel 300+box ignition. he isnt really fond of aftermarket all the wiring that comes with an aftermarket ignition system so before he pull is it off he wants to know what its worth. i mean in the eyes of performance? is he going to notice a big loss if he takes it out? like i said its an LT1 ram air auto with a borla catback (tuneable), the only thing i know about the ignition box is that its an accel 300+ box and i know it has a rev limiter. thanks....Mike
Re: accel 300+ ignition box
I had an Accel 300+ on my LPE 383...I noticed no difference in performance and then it failed, leaving me stranded. I unhooked the box and everything was fine. While the opti spark has its faults, it's pretty powerful for a stock ignition. I have since switched to an MSD, but I don't think it needed it. I used to run MSD on older stuff that actually needed an ignition boost. I don't believe that you benefit from an aftermarket ignition on LT1s. Track times were the same with and without any ignition amplifier.
I also read somewhere that ignition amplifiers could actually shorten the life of the opti-spark by overheating and warping the surface that the rotor spins on, and adding more heat to the cap/rotor causing premature failure, BUT I don't know this for sure...I'm sure someone will chime in...
Bottom line is that I don't think you'll see any marked gains...spend your money on other upgrades...

Re: accel 300+ ignition box
aba383 thank you for confirming what i was telling him all along, i told him he didnt need it and on a sock formula ram air there is plenty of spark. Its like i said i am sure GM gave the car enough spark for its 305hp. Yes he will absolutely sell it. FIVEPT7LT14MULA@aol.com e mail your offer to me Mike
Re: accel 300+ ignition box
I have an accel 300+ from a '96 Corvette (the '96 Corvette has a different connector than '92 -'95 Corvette LT1) I will sell for $100 and shipping.
I don't know the connectors on the F-body, you may have to get a connector.
If interested, give me your email address.
FASTFATBOY, your in Mobile not far from Tallahassee.
If you have the '96 Corvette style connectors on the coil, drive over, plug it in and try it out.

i have not installed my 300 yet but with the 375 unit ,an addition to the 300,it has a window switch for nitrous ,timing retard and other useful options.
if you have plans for nitrous or a blower you may want to keep it, the 375 is a accel unit that works with the 300.

The one thing most people don't know is the '96 Corvette ignition system is an upgrade from previous years for the LT1 Corvette.
The ignition module and coil were designed by the factory for the higher rpm capability of the LT4 engine. The stock '96 Corvette coil is a "hot" coil compared to the earlier years.
