abs inop and popping sound?

abs inop and popping sound?
I was shifting hard into 3rd and I heard a pop so i clutched it. Came from back of car, kinda like someting snapped.Then the abs inop light came on.
Stopped at a gas station, got out and notcied left rear wheel seem a little hot and was burning something. Look underneath I didnt see anything out of place. Turned car back on abs inop light was gone.
Drove the car home just fine, no problems at all. Any ideas?
