A4's with 3.73's inside.

A friend asked me to do some research about his 81 vette. He has a 700r4 with something like 2.73 gears in the rear. His top end is killer, but lacks severely in the low end. So, he's looking into some 3.73's or something a little lower.

What are you guys toping out at with ~26.5 inch tire (I think thats about the same as 4th gen f-body tire size) and you're 700r4? Just looking for a ballpark here!

my cars top end with 2:73's is about 165/170

a 6 speed with 3:42's gets to about 155 or so i think...

he has the older lt1 in his vette... i think theres a difference... might wanna look into that...

anyway, if all is the same, and his motor is basically stock 2:73's - 3:73's will cost ABOUT 20 mph of top end

I have the good ole 2.73's...so our A4's can get up to 170? But who in the hell ever gets up that high...in a street race our gears hurt us because i only get up to about 110. I want to put in some 3.42's...but any estimates on how much that woudl cost me at a shop for just labor?

well... stock i think you can get up to like 166/167, with a tailwind

but with a couple small mods, you can kiss 170

if you bring your car to a real track... oval, or any other LARGE track with some big straight aways, you could get that high... my speedo only goes to 115... but the track radar got me at 155.9 at the end of the straight-away... was a B!TCH trying to slow down for the next turn tho

motor shouldn't make a difference... its directly related to RPM.

I'll let him know that i'll cost him about 20 mph to go from 2.73 to 3.73.

any other opinions?

well he just doesn't want to turn a ton of R's when running 100 (he does that quite regularly)

Honestly, I don't know. He just had me look into it

I run an A4 with 3.73 in it and hit a top speed of 167 on the Auto-bahn in Germany (one of the many perks of being in the military) and I have the video to prove it.. but at 167 my car hit hard off the rev limiter as well.
