A4 To M6 Swap

Me and a fellow board member are dicussing a swap. I am wondering if anyone has done this, and if they can provide either a website link or even just their prior experience with this task.

Both cars are 95's, the Trans Am is an A4, and the Formula is a M6.

Could you also go through each part that will be swapped.

THanks,
James

Also, can we swap PCM's? I would imagine that we would need to, either that or get our PCM's reflashed.

If we do that, when they hook the car up for inspection, will it read the wrong VIN, and can that cause you to fail?

THanks,
James

Also, are there any "new" parts we will need to buy? If we have two properly working cars, should this be a direct swap in, could we possibly get away without splicing any wires?

Also, does anyone have a T56 to 4L60E website, the only one I have found is 4L60E to T56. Anything special about that swap?

Thanks,
James

Well I have done a 3.4 to LT1 swap then an a4 to m6 swap and gonna start on a 383 soon. The a4 to m6 swap is pretty easy. Bolt and unbolt then bolt back up. Since you know the mileage while your gonna have everythiong out its the opportune time to change the clutch etc...You will be changing interior consoles too. You will have to replace the pedal assembly plus drill holes for the reservoir and the master cylinder. You will also have to cut a hole in your floorboard for the tranny. Easiest way I found for that was to dummy install the m6 and mark underneath the car on all four corners then let the tranny down and drill four holes one on each corner (you'll end up with a small box) then get inside the car with a dremel and cut it out, worked perfectly for me. Installing the cylinder was easy, it goes underneath the brake booster and the pedals already have a small plastic diagram. Easy swap but if you have any questions feel free to email me

Everything you need to know.

As for swapping PCMs, you can swap them, but then you will also swap the VINs in them. Also, you probably won't hook up everything so you might get some codes from the skip shift solenoid, etc.

Also, the gear ratio is different. Your car will show the speed wrong after the swap and his car will show the speed wrong and have wrong shift points. So I'd recommend programming both PCMs instead of swapping them.

I am the other half the swap.l Actually did a swap on my 98SS from M6(me) to A4 with another buddy.

When we did that, we just swapped PCMs instead of having to spend money to get them reflashed and what not. We never had any issues or codes due to the swap.

Are the LT1 PCMs different then LS1s?

Charlie

I question the PCM deal myself. Of coarse, worst case, I have a laptop, we could pitch in and do LT1 edit at the same time.

I have found quite a bit of info on the swap so far, looks like wiring, steering column removal, and clutch master cyl are the hardest parts.

I didn't have to remove the steering column.. believe it or not you can just take the old pedals out, loosen the electrical box under there(body control module?), manuver the M6 pedals in, and then put the BCM back in place. I think you will HAVE to use the A4 harness with the A4 since there are a LOT more wires in there for tranny operation.

Maybe some of my experience can help:

[edit]- And a BIG thanks goes to Ion (madwolf) for the PCM issues... and being patient with me
