987 Spring Question

I sent my heads to the machine shop so they can Do a valve job and put on the springs. They called me to tell me that the spring wont fit, because it is to tall. I told them that they would have to cut the seat a bit so the spring would fit. They also said that the 987 spring wont go for my cam, to go with the 986 spring from comp cams. What do you guys think? Im juss waiting on the heads so I could put the engine back in.

Re: 987 Spring Question

The 987-16 is a bit too stiff on the open side for a non billett cam. I would definatly run the 986-16 or the 26918-16 springs . That much open pressure could cause havec on the cam and lifters.

Re: 987 Spring Question

No it's not the 987 is not really worth much in my book. The 986 is worse.

What cam are you running?

The 987 spring fits... I don't know what to tell you there.

Re: 987 Spring Question

I run the 986's in the Camaro with the LPE216 cam and stock L98 Cast heads. I did hav eot have the seats cut though to accept the wirder spring.

I also run the 987's with the LPE219 cam on the TF heads

Re: 987 Spring Question

Cause the 987 should install at 1.800 and the 986 should install at 1.750"

Ok whatever, the springs just aren't enough for that.

Re: 987 Spring Question

In my opinion and what I have done the 987's aren't enough spring to control anything.

Re: 987 Spring Question

I will totaly agree they sure arent top choice by a long way but, I just think that it is too much open pressure for the austempered cam core. Might get to tracking the core up a lot, if run for a lot of miles.. just my 2 cents But what do I know???

Re: 987 Spring Question

I have stock length valves 2.00 1.56 and am running 987-16 on my heads only difference between the 986 and 987 is the inner spring i had bought 986-16 for my motor im running a CC503 with 1.65:1 ratio RR and i was going to be right at the limits on the 986's according to Comp Cams tech line so they sold me a set of the inner springs to make my 986's into 987's i have had no problems whatsoever my machinist cut my seat a little deeper to get me at a 1.80 installed

330lbs open is too much for a cast core cam? Not a roller.
