97 Camaro Z28
97 Camaro Z28
I was driving one today & the low coolant light came on it was running warm, the gauge said 210 -220 sitting at the light but would drop to about 185- 190 while driving. So I got it home & turned it off & it started puking antifreeze out the overflow cap. The antifreeze was like a bronze color. Do they even make such a bronze color antifreeze, or does it have more problems? Then the tranny started shifting hard when it was running warm. I went back out there & drove it around for about 15 min & the coolant light was off but it started running a little warm & it was shifting softer but it didn't puke anymore antifreeze up. The coolant is full.
Thanks for your alls help
I'm new at the camaro scene.

Re: 97 Camaro Z28
No they don't make a bronze antifreeze for these cars, your coolant is old and needs to be changed to maintain proper cooling. The cars always shift kinda hard, if you think its shifting harder due to it being warm install a transmission cooler, it's one of the best things for an automatic transmission.
what about dexcool? Dexcool is an orangish bronze color. Im not sure what year GM started using this coolant but maybe thats what the bronze stuff is. I kno the dexcool came later than 95.

Someone over on the LT1 board said that Dexcool is orange.I drove it again & the service engine light came on
I just hope something major isn't wrong with it. Anyways the dealership said they would take care of the problem.
I'd just like to learn as much as I can for a little arsenol for tomorrow morning
thanks guys
& once again sorry for clicking the wrong forum

Re: 97 Camaro Z28
some coolant is a reddish/orange color, Yes. That's not saying that yours wasn't green at one time, but, it could help you breathe a little easier. I have a hard time thinking that all those gallons of coolant could turn bronze like that... there would be SOME trace of green if you were using regular antifreeze.
Re: 97 Camaro Z28
Every later model Z28/TA I've ever seen came with Dexcool. There's a lot of mixed opinions on this board as to which is better, but yes, after a year or two of use it does have a 'bronze' sort of color to it. You could also be do for a flush. Generally, I try to change mine once a year. But you'll hear different opinions on that too.
As mentioned before, I would start with the small stuff. Check your stat, fans and then go from there.
