96 Z28 hard to start
Re: 96 Z28 hard to start
hey mine did the same thing. So i replaced the map sensor and the idle air control sensor along with the TPS and now it runs like its brand new off the lot. all three senors together are about 180 idle air control sensor is 100 bucks if you got the screw in type if you got the bolt on type its only 30. i have the screw in type which is why my total came out to 180 bucks that an because the map sensor is 60

Here is some info on the crank sensor. Replacing it doesn't mean you fix the problem.

Have you tried priming the fuel pump several times before cranking the engine?
When you finally get it started, does it have a problem restarting if you shut it off and restart?
Re: 96 Z28 hard to start
i did replace the crank sensor. had no effect. dont remember the numerical codes. if i cut it off and immediately try to restart it. it cranks. if i wait 2 minutes. it doesnt start.
Re: 96 Z28 hard to start
i replaced the sensors and still no effect. i tried priming the fuel pump. same thing. going to the beach this week. next week the car is going to a master mechanic. ive spent too much money playing the guessing game. so as soon as i find out the what the problem was. ill be sure and let u guys know. thanks for all the help.

Re: 96 Z28 hard to start
i took the car to a shop. the problem turned out to be a wiring problem. on the optispark there are 2 wires that run to it. one is the coil wire. the other is the plug that is attached at the bottom. im guessing thats where the electricity comes from. not sure. but the whole wiring harness that runs it was burned at was causing the car hard to crank. wasnt sending enough power to the opti. hope this helps. it fixed mine.
Re: 96 Z28 hard to start
Odd that you would have a misfire detected with a non-functional crank position sensor. The only reason the CKP was added was to meet the OBD-II requirement for misfire detection.
What was the exact numerical code you got? When you mention "high resolution timing", it sounds like you got one of the codes for the optical cam position sensor in the Optispark.

Re: 96 Z28 hard to start
heres the codes i got from the shop i sent it to.
bank 1 sensor 1- PO300 ENG
MISFIRE DETECTED- PO336 CKP
SENSOR "A" (18X24X) OUT OF RANGE
PO372 TIMING REFERENCE A TOO
FEW 24X PULSES CODE PO372 SETS BACKING DURING LONG CRANK CONNECTOR AT DIST IS BROKEN BUT SCOPED
LOW REF SIG A DIST IS GETTING VOLTAGE PROBLEM IN OPTISPARK A & DIST HOMESS.
my car cranks and runs great now. i dont think its ever had as much power as it does now. all the guy did was change that wiring harness to the opti.
